Commuting from Melbourne Inner City to Berwick
Hi
I've been offered a job at Monash Uni. I think my work is going to be based at the Berwick campus, although I may do some teaching at Clayton also.
I know Berwick is about 40km from the city centre. I'm a single bloke going by myself, so aren't too keen on living in the suburbs. Does anyone know how the trains are to Berwick from the city? Any thoughts on inner city areas that are handy for this commute?
Thanks

Clayton and surrounds is a very cheap place to rent in because it is full of students and migrants. You'd be nuts to commute from melbourne to Berwick in the outer south. Berwick is an expensive area to live but Dandenong is cheap, has good facilities and would suit a young person's lifestyle, lots of clubs, bars and social life.

Hi there I live in Narre Warren South, which just down the road from Berwick. To get the train would take you about 50 to 60 mins, which is not too bad!
I get the train into Melbourne daily for work and you get used too it really like any where. Berwick village is really nice, but coming from a village back in the Uk, I would call it a high street!
Personal opinon only, but living in Dandenong... I would not, depends on what you like.
Monash uni is about a 15 min walk from the station by the way..
Let me know if you need any other info...

Thanks very much for those responses.
I guess it's hard to tell how things will really work until I get there. My feeling at the moment is that I'm prepared to put up with an hour on the train so I can live in the city. On that note, I'm thinking North Melbourne. I'm recently divorced, so living around families in suburbs isn't really my thing. Don't really want to live among students either!
What are the trains like? I live in Liverpool, and avoid public transport, which is unpleasant and often dangerous.

Melbourne has a great tram system. At present I'm using London Transport every day, so understand your concerns, but you'll love the trams there! However, if you want to avoid students, there is quite a substantial university area north of the CBD, plus hospitals etc. I am also heading for that area, Carlton, Parkville etc. as I really like the feel of it (going alone, kids grown up, want to be near the centre). Best of luck!
