choosing a suburb nightmare!
Please help! We are moving to Melbourne next year and i shall be working in Camberwell. My head is burling with looking at different websites, train routes, etc.
Ideally we would like to live somewhere that i can commute easily as i won't be driving ( plus i will be working hospital shifts), somewhere that is not miles away from shops, restaurants or facilities. Not fussed about beach or anywhere, just want somewhere where our daughter could go up and down the street in safety on her bike, so a child friendly area. We will be renting and looking at a maximum of $450 per week.
I hope someone can help

Hi, ideally you could look at Camberwell however its not a cheap suburb and being in a desirable area nor are its neighbouring suburbs. Child riding bike up and down the street does not really happen here in Melbourne unless you are close to a bike path or live in an outer suburb. Children are usually accompanied by their parents when on bikes unless they are older.
Its hard because if you work shifts you may find you do need to drive to work.
Houses in the inner suburbs are expensive and you would probably only get a two bedroom apartment for the money.
If you have arranged short term accommodation I would wait until you get here and then speak to work colleagues and see where they commute from etc.
Melbourne is a huge city as big as the area of Greater London with four million people. There are places I have never visited in all the years I have lived here. We live a hundred kilometres from the airport.
To aid your search join Life in Victoria there is a link to it at the foot of the page and a lot of the members are already here so can give you their views.
Good luck.

Thank you Petals. We did look at Camberwell but unsure if it is within our price range! I guess we just want to get it right to avoid any more moving once we get there :)
I will have a look at the Life in Victoria forum.
Thanks again!
