Moving to Melbourne

Could anybody give us some advice about the best places to buy property in Melbourne. Me and my wife & 2 kids could soon be moving to Melbourne and would like to rent or buy a house within comuting distance of the city centre.
Our kids are 5 and 8 and we are both 35. Hope to get confirmation of a job offer in the next few days and hope to move to Melbourne from Scotland early in the new year. So any advice on what area to look for property and what areas to avoid would be appreciated many thanks.

Hi Harvey.

My husband and I are looking to go to Newport (Western Suburbs). I have family that live in Williamstown and know the Altona area pretty well. "Willy" is very expensive though - Newport has the old charm still but it's just not on the water hence the drop in price. Train station at Newport also - about 15 mins to CBD (Flinders Street Station).

I'm Australian and have been to Melbourne on numerous occasions (including being born there) - and I LOVE that area. The other places I wouldn't have minded moving to are: St Kilda; Brighton; Sth Yarra; Toorak; Prahran; Elwood (for the price of what places are going for in these areas I couldn't believe it, particulary the age of some of the properties)

If anyone has Sky - please tune in to Real Estate TV (ch. 250) on weekends as there are Australian property shows (Location Location Location and Hot Auctions). You may want to check the Radio Times website though.
