Victoria - The Garden State

cosworth123, are you referring to the Dandenong Ranges or the City of Dandenong?

Although they are both on the outskirts of Melbourne, they are two different places.

The dilemma that you face in relation to moving to a new country and leaving family and friends behind is one that has faced many migrants. Many have successfully made the move and are now fairdinkum Aussies but many did not and eventually returned from whence they came. Some, although still living in Australia, do not regard it as their home and long for the days when they can return to the UK.

I guess it's all to do with what you are looking for in Australia and what you are leaving behind in the UK, but as they say in the Ad, 'If you never never go, then you'll never never know'.

Anyhow, any general questions that you may have on life in Australia, fire away.

If I can't answer them, I will try and point you in the right direction.

Cheers.

Hi ya, yeah myself and my partner Mark are both moving to Melboure, arriving on 21 March 2006 - scarrrrrrryyyyy but hey very very exciting. I have had some thoughts as to whether i am doing the right thing, leaving my family and friends behind, they are really the only reasons for me to have any doubts. Also my dad died suddenly two months ago and the dilema I had nearly made my head turn inside out, "how am I going to leave my mum" but as John says you will never know until you go". My family fully support me in my decision to leave ( well thats what they tell me, really I know they do not want me to go) and have all told me that for any reason i want to come home not to feel like I have failed I am just to pick up the phone and let them know they will get me a flight if I ain't got the money, so really I am not taking any risk. Go for it.

its great that your family and friends are behind you, and not really letting you know their feelings.
our family and friends keep questioining our decsion or more to the point mine. i work here as a drylining & plastering contractor with a small business i have built up here for the past 18 years. it gets harder every year and would greatly love a change.
what jobs do you have here and what are your plans for employment in oz?
have you booked a container?
where are you going to live in melbourne?
sorry for all the questions as i too would love to have a date fixed, we are due to make another trip with our three children early january 2006.

thanks richard

Hi Richard

Yeah having the family behind you does help (even if youknow deep down you two sisters don't want you to leave), also I am so glad that I spoke to my dad two days before he died to tell him we had our tickets booked, he was so over the moon and even told me he was getting a piggy bank to start saving for the trip, and I was to be sure to have a couple of roos as pets for his arrival,,,, he lived life to the full before he died and I am so glad that this is something he defo passed to me.

Mark is a bricklayer, thats the reason we got our permanent residency, as we got sponsored by the state of Victoria, hence we have to live in this state for two years, hey I can think of worse things!!!! Looking at the work for brickies in an around Melbourne, I am hoping that he will find work pretty easy, but not going to stress as even though we got in cause of his trade, if push comes to shove he can turn his hand to pretty much about anything, so we are not even looking until probably our last week in Thailand (yet got a month on route, horrraahhh). Me I work in the insurance industry, well for part of Lloyds of London, so I am hoping that I can used this experience and hopefully retrain when I get there and hopefully will get something within the insurance industry part time when I get there.

Taking a container, nope we are going to be shipping personal items by sea, leaving about 2 weeks before we head of to Thailand (with only our backpacks) we decided that we are going to sell, give away or just leave pretty much everything, we though fresh start.. probably when we get there it will be like sh&t how much do we have to buy.....

Have you got your visa granted yet, if not when did you send in you DIMIA application?? any word of you meds, we were told by our migration agent (yeah we used one, well we ain't married and there were a few other probs with our application) that once you get confirmation of the meds as long as you are not on your last legs you are on your way.

Well keep positive and always remember "you only have one life so live it the way you and you loved ones want to" and as I said what it the down right worst that can happen, and if it does is it that bad.... no.

Roll on 19 February and our big adventure............. :) :) :) Keep in contact and you never know we may meet one day in Melbourne...... :D :D :D :D :D

yes we also used a migration company but it still took 3 years and arouind £4,000.00. my partner, me and our three children all now have residents visas with entry to be no later than 17 of may 2006.
we are due to fly out for another holiday in january. but my partner canot commit to stay. she dose realise how much freedom we will all hopefully have with a new life style etc . if it all went wrong then we would come back to england and we would have had an amazing experience!!
have you decided where in melbourne to relocate?
i allready have building contacts in surrey hills, he is the brother of a big constructiuon company in stanstead i work for. he has only just started his company. im sure mark will have no problem finding work.
iam currently looking at 5 acres of land, and have plans for a nice house and a pool hopefully all for around £250,000.00.
it will be great to see the kids running around that back yard!! hopefully i can still keep my dream alive and convince my partner to make the jump!

I can fully understand where you wife is coming from, well lets be honest its the same old scenairo between men and woman, it must be so hard especially when you have three kids, me and mark have really got it easier being just the two of us to worry about, but hopefully within the next couple of years there will be three..... as I said previoulsy what if it all goes wrong - not that it will, hopefully - but if you are like me, I have a life I pretty much enjoy, but getting up at 6am to travel to london to earn a wage we need to keep our noses above water, is that something I see myself doing for the next 35 years, no..... so we have decided to just take the opportunity.. At least when you go for your visit and validate you visa you have say 4 years before you have to make the life changing decision. All the best in whatever happens, from your contact does he think that mark will be okay for work as a brickie ( and yeah he is a god dam good one, always works on a price work basis!!!!)

we are not sure what area we are going to go to, been on loads of furums and have made list of areas to move to, just going to have to investigate them when we get there.

If you wife feels that she is all alone with the weird feelings// thoughts she is having get her to send me a private email to elizabethtennant@hotmail.com, I have met so many woman on this forum who are in the same boat as me andyour wife "are we making the right decision" sometimes us ladies need to gossip to other ladies!!!! its a woman thing that you men won't understand.

All the best in your trip.

:D :D :D :D :D :D

hi bet,

the comment about men not understanding women did give me a laugh!
at prescent the construction industry in oz is booming, but just like here it is seeing a cooling off period but with a steady growth.
the main construction in the south is timber frame buildings. if you get too see some of the land set aside for domestic housing it goes on for miles. timber frame houses only require an external brick skin so mark will be spending lots of time in the sun and not being raind off with no pay.
if you are transfering money try www.hifx.co.uk their rates are better than the banks but have a minimum of £5,000.00 per transaction.the last time i looked they were giving $2.39 to the £
have you been to oz before deciding to emirate?
cheryl my partner has been reading this and has told me off for my bad spelling!!

G'day Bet, as I said before in another Thread, Mark will have no problems getting a start as a bricklayer.

In so far as looking for an area to settle in around Melbourne, my personal preference is to the eastern suburbs and beyond.

Bet, the above info from cosworth is right on the mark, although it does rain in Victoria, but that is why it is so nice and green and called The Garden State.

cosworth is looking at settling in the Dandenong Ranges and if you or any other member of PomsInOz settle out that way, we'll have to get together for a BBQ and a few beers. I know a top spot in the Sherbrooke Forest (part of the Dandenong Ranges) for a BBQ. The BBQs are all supplied, all you have to do is bring the Steaks, Wine and Beer.

What do you reckon?

On the 1st of November, which is Melbourne Cup Day all of the neighbours in our Court will be having a champaign breakfast out in our nature reserve, followed by a BBQ, we will place a few bets, listen to the race and generally have a good day.

An English couple is driving up from Adelaide to join us and stay for a few days. We met over the internet on a Site similar to this but restricted to Police Officers recruited from the UK by the South Australian Police and as part of the police network (brotherhood) we took care of things as they passed through Melbourne on their way to Adelaide.

We are looking forward to seeing them again, we have kept in contact via phone, email and SMS and they have really settled in to their newly purchased home and are already patrolling the streets of Adelaide.

Anyhow, enough of the gossip, catch you later.

Cheers.
