Moving to Melbourne in Feb and looking at best areas for 15 year old and 2 year old. Need lots of green areas, playgrounds, parks and good schools, as well as being within 30 mins of CBD (will be working there). Cost not as important as quality of the area. Having said that, what is an average rent - we are looking at 270AUD upwards per week for a decent area(have been looking at Hawthorn, Camberwell, Glen Iris, basically east of centre. Also like the look of South Yarra). Any advice from people who have been or lived there? Thanks :D
Hi Nicnak
Just found this site, so this is my first post.I am an aussie living in London for past 4 years, I lived in Melbourne for a few years and the areas you are looking at are very nice. I have a nearly 2 year old, and hubby and I are moving back at the end of 2006 and are also looking at the areas of East Malvern,Camberwell as they have good transport links, schools, and reasonable housing costs, well compared to London anyway.Good luck with the move,Melbourne is a great place to live.
Thanks for that, it helps to get the facts from someone who has lived there - sometimes estate agents arent reliable! Does 270-300AUD per week sound reasonable ie would we get a good sized, well kept place for that, or should we pay a bit more?
Do you know anything about any of the secondary schools around there?
In regards to renting a property if you wanted a nice 3 bedroom house I think you would have to pay at least $300 if not more, also Hawthorn is probably going to be cheaper than Camberwell.
Balwyn is a suburb not far north of Camberwell and it is supposed to be nice and Balwyn High School is one of the best state schools in Melbourne, although you would have to make sure you are in their catchment area.
Hi Nicnak
Balwyn is probably only 2 miles or so north of Camberwell so not far from CBD.There is a really good Australian map site called www.whereis.com on their home page you can enter the suburb you want to find and it shows you it on a detailed map and surrounding suburbs, it is worth looking at.
I have done a lot of research on rentals in the western suburbs and Point cook is a beautiful area. You can get some lovely rentals ( a lot of them being brand new houses) for around $270 a week.
Also www.realestate.com.au is a great website for looking at both rentals and houses for sale.
