Melbourne and Surrounding Areas

Hi all, looking for some general information as we are going to be relocating to Victoria in Feb 2006 :D :D :D . The main things we are looking for in where we want to live is decent properties (not to overly priced as we need to find jobs first), in a reasonable commuting distrance to Melbourne (where my other halfs work will be), nice area - family orrientated, gyms and somewhere that you can leave all day and not be thinking that you have been broken into, or have I just been living in outskirts of london for too lond!!!!! nice friendly are to eat and socialise locally!!!!! Mark kindly told us that Glenroy and Broadmeadows - any other ideas from people would be very very much appreicated :?: :?: :?:

I would give Glenroy/Broadmeadows a miss if you're now looking for all that. I suggested those suburbs as a very cheap starting point for a no children, unfussy couple with a limited budget.

Keep in mind, family orientated suburbs rarey exist anymore...well only on Neighbours

Doesn't matter where you live in a major city of oz these days, it's not a matter of "will" my place be broken into, it's a matter of "when", so get insurance.

Hmmm, I could think of better places than Broadmeadows.

Will your other half's work be actually in the CBD of Melbourne?

I would look at the eastern side suburbs of Melbourne, the further out the cheaper the properties, the closer to the CBD the more expensive.

Two favourite outer suburbs of mine are Lillydale and Croydon and they would be about 1 hours travel by train to the CBD of Melbourne.

Thanks alot John, will have a look at these areas on the web today. Just to let you know I'm another Northern Irish girls heading down under, Broughshane (just outside Ballymena) born and bred, the other half is English.

Yeah defo know first things first it to get mark some wheels, well with all his tools he couldn't travel by train, no way, I assume that he will be travelling into the city every day. I think that will be the same for me, but hopefully by train, I believe that the train service is pretty good around Melbourne, I am currently working in insurance/administration, and currently commute into London from Kent so an hour journey on the train ain't to bad for me, and heres hoping that I will only have to do it three days a week.

No doubt I will have a lot more questions for you.

G'day Bet, I would say that you being involved in the insurance industry, there is a fair chance that you will be travelling to the city.

I think you mentioned that Mark was a Bricklayer.

He won't be travelling on a train and he won't be travelling into the city.

99.9% of the current work for Brickies is out in the suburbs on the new housing developments. Mark could be lucky and get a start with a Squad who is prepared to pick him up from his home and take him to the Site, but in any case, he is going to have to get himself his own transport asap.

As you would know, as a Brickie, Mark is going to be working outdoors and in summer it will be hot and in the full sun. I realise that it is early days yet but it will be very important that he wears the appropriate clothing, broad brimmed hat etc and barrier cream to protect him from the sun.

This not only applies to Brickies, but to anyone, when going out in the sun, ie to the beach etc.

I came to Australia in 1964, I lived around Newtownards and then moved to Belfast, near Stormont.

I really didn't see much of Ireland until my wife and I returned there for a holiday in 1999. We loved the Glens of Antrim and of course I had a wee tasting at Bushmills.

Anyhow, all the best and if you have any questions, then fire away. If I know the answer, I'll tell you and if I don't, I'll try and point you in the right direction.

Cheers.

Thanks John will do, no doubt as the time grows closer the list of questions will be getting longer.

Glens of Antrim this was the Tennant families weekly outing, I was born about 7 miles from the entrance, practically my backyard, stunning I must say,,,,,, one of those places that it will take a lot of beating to better the view.

thanks again.

I'm a bit concerned about the the comment on burglary :? Is this a major problem in Melbourne/Aus ?? I do hope not cos otherwise it'll just be like living in the UK

regards, Lee
