There are no doubt problems with the trains, it's just that in the time that my husband has been commuting he hasn't had any real issues with space, journey time or cancellations. The odd thing happens now and again but as I say, far better than commuting into London or Manchester. I find public transport in Melbourne far better than the UK.

Thanks for all the posts. Still a bit confused as to why an area closer to the city would offer better value properties than places like Frankston South. I guess until I'm there I won't know, but Edithvale and Aspendale Gardens are now on the list of places to live.

Its just like all cities, it comes down to the land value per metre/foot whatever.

Just a quite note about the trains again - as I said before we are in Edithvale and if my husband catches any train, express or not, between 7am and 7:45 he gets a seat. He usually settles down with his laptop and a coffee and enjoys not being bumper to bumper in traffic, or stuck with his head under someone else's arm pit as would happen on a commuter train in the UK, ha ha! As for the trains back, they are jam packed between about 5 and 6pm but loads of people get off at Richmond, Cheltenham and then again at Mordialloc, so it is not so bad.

Also wanted to just mention that we pay $380 a week for a lovely 3 bed detached weatherboard with a huge garden, about 5-8 minutes walk from the station and then it is 2 more minutes to the beach. Not sure how that compares with the other places you have been looking but thought the info might be useful to have. Good luck deciding, it is a big decision and a bit of a gamble choosing somewhere to live when you've never been there before.
