Rental advice for Melbourne

I was wondering if you found the Melbourne rental market a nightmare? I've noted the ID etc requirements, and we'll have two positive references, as well as money in the bank, and my boyfriend will be employed while he is looking. I have seen some news stories noting the lack of rental properties, and I was wondering if it is really competitive, the way I have heard it is in Sydney from friends?

Please don't worry about the 100 point ID check just make sure you add a covering letter saying you have just arrived. As long as you can show money to pay they don't really care about anything else.
