      Moving to Melbourne

      Hi

my family are looking to move to Melbourne in the next 6-9 months and would like some suggestions on some family suburbs to rent then eventually purchase. We have two very young children the eldest being a toddler and a baby. We would like to have some nice parks, soft play and kids facilities nearby.

my husband will be based in Melbourne and we have been looking at Mornington, seaford, patterson lakes areas but not sure if the commute would be too long. Ideally we would like to be in walking distance from a train/tram stop and no longer than 50 min train/tram journey.

We would also like the area to have a nice town where there are enough shops, bars, restaurants cafes etc so you dont have to take the car everywhere but we also dont want to live somewhere where the town is too big/busy.

      would appreciate any advice.

      Thanks

We are in a similar situation. Moving to Melbourne in June.

We are also looking at the areas you emntioned.
However I think we will wait until we get over there and then whittled down our list of preferred suburbs.

We will have a lot of driving to do!

We're staying in a short term rental seaford for a month when we arrive.
All the best with your move.

Welcome, 50 minutes will not get you to the CBD from any of the suburbs you mention.

Mornington - 15 -20 minute drive to Frankston, park at the Station and an hour on the train to the CBD, then get to the office.

Seaford a bit less, Patterson Lakes drive to Carrum Station and a bit less.

You would probably need to live in a ten to fifteen kilometres of the CBD for a shorter commute and that comes at the price of being very congested, very busy and expensive.

Point Cook is a place that young families seem to be moving to and its an easier commute to the CBD.

Quiet and not busy does not really come into it in Melbourne unless you live right out on the fringe.

Melbourne covers a huge area and there are places I have never visited and for me to go to the other side I need a packed lunch and an overnight stay .

Have a look at the metlink site Home - Metlink - Your guide to public transport in Melbourne and Victoria gives you the transport links and then have a look on realestate.com.au and domain.com.au at housing in the areas you are interested in.

If you choose to live on the outer fringe you will need two cars as transport does not run past the door on the new large estates, also to get children to kinder and school.

Check broadband provision on http://whirlpool.net.au/ and see what is available, some estates only have wireless and depending on where you are in proximity to a tower will make the difference in reception.

There are a lot of threads in the suburb forum about different areas and if you have the time have a read through them. A lot of information has been provided by members and a lot of them live here already.

There is a thread for the western suburbs set up by a member who recently came to live here and this thread gives all sorts of information for new arrivals.

      Good luck.

Ideally, it is nice to wait til you get here, then you can get a feel for the places.

Lots of Poms live in the bayside area, and it's a 30 min commute from Sandringham to CBD on train. It's possibly a little pricey too, in terms of houses, but www.realestate.com.au will give you an idea of what you can get.

There is a UK playgroup in Hampton for chance to meet people and children to make friends. Hampton has a couple of decent parks, as do most places!

Mornington is lovely, a little more peaceful and not too much of a commute, but it might become a daily grind, as friends of ours found out. They love living there, but, her hubby hates commuting, but think thats to do with the heavy rainfalls we have had this year!

Hope you find a place just right for you! Good luck & welcome to Melbourne!

We live in Patterson Lakes, 2k to the beach & train station. About 45mins to city on train, hour by car.
