Tom Tom

I want to get a tom tom (or equivalent) for use in Australia. Does anyone know if it is cheaper to buy here and download Oz maps or shall I wait till I get there, or pick one up in the US on the way?

I'm sorry if this is a repeat post, but I've only got 4 weeks and five days to sort it out before I go!!

I think they are not used too much in Oz ? People still use maps :)

Yeah, but it's a big country, so big maps. How do I see over it to drive?

I have a Tom Tom Xl and I have been looking into this.

Officially (from Tom Tom) the Australia maps are £130+

The cheapest I have seen them on e-bay so-far is £60.

So it is quite pricey!

From what I recall from being over there a couple of months ago (and having a nosey around the various shopping websites), a TomTom One cost about £155, whereas I bought my UK and Ireland edition a few days ago from Amazon for £128. The Australia map to download directly from the TomTom site are £59.95.

Hi Rbecca
Not sure about cost but I bought a satnav a few months ago and find it fantastic for getting around! I used to rely on maps, but quite honestly the roads are so busy and you can't often stop if you think you're going the wrong way (which I invariably was!) so it's far easier to have the sat nav talking to you! I bought mine in Strathfield Car & Radio here and paid $348, it was on special offer at the time but I can't remember what make it is except it's easy to use, touch screen and gets me for A to B and back again!

The Broughtons has a spectacular aura aboutThe Broughtons has a spectacular aura about
Hi there,

We bought the Tom Tom One XL the day after we arrived. At the time (2 weeks ago) it should have been $599 but we haggled and got it down to $513 (strange price but wasn't complaining). This version is the touch screen. It has already proved invaluable to us in getting around to view properties and finding where potential places of work are. The price has now started to come down on this because the new version of the normal Tom Tom One is about to be released. The XL is now $499.

I use it and once my car is ready guess where it will be living!!!

Hi. We downloaded the map for £108 for the whole of Australia. Found it excellent and would not be without it. I would recommend you do this before you arrive. Just to let you know it may take a little while when you first turn on in OZ while it tries to find the new GPS signal, but once it has you will have no problems at all.
