Mr KP,

Yes.

BUT if you buy one in the UK it will have a UK map on it, so you will need the Australia map, but the unit itself will work absolutely fine. Think of the TomTom device itself as the "map reader". The unit knows where it is because the satellite tells it so, but needs to translate it (so we understand where we are) by having the right map.

Dave

Hi there. It would also be an idea to check that you have the correct memory card in the tom-tom. bought the western euro map last year and had to replace a 256m card with a 1gig.

It seems a waste of money to buy a satnav in UK (£150) then have to buy the maps for Australia (£100). Total of £250. Surely it works out cheaper and easier (no time wasted searching for maps and downloading them) to just buy a Tom Tom in Oz.

That just seemed to jump out at me when I read this post.

All righty!! Thnks a lot for all the advice. However, there seems to have been a misundertanding. I ask a question and everyone is supposed to give me the same answer! Then I can say that I got the best advice! Now I have more choices.

I decided to do a bit more research. A ToTom on the TomTom UK website (Tomtom One 3rd Ed - for the purpose of camparison) is £149 and £127 on Amazon but less on ebay. The Australian map via wwwtomtom is £60 so I could get the tomtom and map Europe inc and Oz for £187. Or on wwwtomtom Oz site the same model is $399 (£173), so technically it is cheaper to buy in Oz. Its not like I need the Europe maps! I could try picking up the 'thing' in the US on my way but that is only £5 cheaper and I don't need the US maps unless it is for 4 days in LAs Vegas. Then I suppose I could wait and look in duty free (can I buy in duty free in Oz if I am arriving there?).

I am going to get in touch with a car dealer and ask how much one would be if I bought it included in a new car - Genius - yet another choice!!!

Thanks for the advice. It's great to know other people are in the same boat...er car.

I will let you know what happens.

Rebecca

SatNav

Hi Rebecca
Look on STRATHFIELD - MOBILE PHONES, CAR AUDIO, DIGITAL MEDIA, MP3, HOME THEATRE, MEMORY as they are very good for satnavs, etc and often have special offers...I bought mine there recently and it was a really good buy!

The Toyota garage where I am most probably buying my new car have quoted $330 for fitting a Tomtom ready for collection, so it looks like that's the way I will go. Thanks for all the advice - it got me off my bottom enough to do some research.

gary12 will become famous soon enough
Just bought an Australia map for Tom Tom XL (and Go versions) on e-bay for £25.

So they can be bought quite cheap!
