buying a car
G'day >> Can someone advise how long car purchase takes in Aus?
Assume I see a (slightly) used car on the forecourt; do the deal; have the dosh ( ozzie bank cheque) and insurance set up over the phone,( thanks for this info previous "posters") is it just dealer prep time like in UK or are there some other fiendish ozzie rules ( the REGO??) that make it slower.
Once we arrive we want to dump our expensive hire car soonest and get mobile for property searches etc etc.

G'day
It's fairly simple.
Walk in with dosh, Haggle, Haggle some more, Shake hands, Fill in forms, Part with dosh, Phone insurance company, Drive away.
Allow an hour if you're polite. I've done it it 20 minutes (I'm not inclined to politeness and chit-chat).

Thanks Bob -- Must brush up my egyptian market haggle skills. Ozzie Internet papers today say the used car market is set for a fall given the number of new cars being bought -- so we will take a good look round and then get haggling!
We are in a similar situation and are arriving in October. Will have a car hire for a week but checking out cars as we speak to try and get sorted in advance. There are loads of vehicle sites. Hope you find what you're looking for. I know you will be nearer Melbourne itself but if you fancy a trip to the countryside at any time - we will be in Sale in the beautiful Gippsland area. You would be made most welcome for a visit. I believe there a couple of golf courses and a nice bowling green too. Our sons golf and we have a done a little bolwing in our time - but happy to meet up for a coffee.
Hope all goes well with the car hunting - let us know what you find!

dont forget transfer duty is going up to 2%,,meaning when you register the vehicle in your name you pay a fee which is 2% of the value/cost of vehicle,,

Hi Cal,
Do you know when the 2% transfer duty is happening? What is the cost of it just now? We should be buying a car in Brisbane at the beginning of September.
Cheers,
Denise

Hi Cal
You seem to regularly forget that not all of Australia uses Queensland law.
The original posters - Chris & Dave give a victorian address in their profile. As do Thistles and Gumtrees. A 2% increase in Qld stamp duty is not relevant to either of these posters. I know there are lots of Queenslanders on here, but you Banana Benders are not going to take over. The Sandgropers will fight back :)
So... just to clarify... You buy the car, then pay 1 or 2 % of the value to register it, and pay for insurance. Is there anything else such as road tax, mot, etc?
