Can any one tell me what condition car we would be able to get for around $10,000, less if possible. We have 3 children so not to small.

Cars are much more expensive over here. We got a ford falcon au for $6,000 and that was at an auction. The milage was ok and it had a few scratches and dents. We probably spent another couple of grand on it afterwards. I would suggest an auction for value for money.
We just bought a Hyundai Accent (think that's how you spell it), 3 years old, 2 year warrenty plus break down cover for $11.000 in Perth. Went to a car dealer (looked in the bargain basement so to speak), plenty to chose from.

You should be able to get a three year old Ford Falcon or Holden Commodore from a dealer which should be ideal for your purposes and is cheap to service.

Just thought I would help out here, The ongoing cost of rego is not tied to the Value of the car, It is only the initial Stamp duty that is affected by the purchase cost. Here in Qld the ongoing rego costs are determined by the number of cylinders the vehicle has, ie: 4cyl = $600ish, 6cyl = $800ish for 12 mths.

Good post, this has been helpful as OH and i were talking about this at the weekend how much money do we need to put to one side etc. So a visit to the sites has given us a ball park figure. We had already been told that second hand cars hold there price well but now we have some information to work on.
