Price of Cars

Ok, Guys got another question.

We have been looking at websites selling cars in Oz and we are very concerned that they seem so much more expensive.

Is this because we are looking at non Australian Brands, if so what makes should we be looking at.

Thanks

Holden I think! We are looking at getting something like a Holden Commodore.

Have you checked www.carsguide.com.au, www.carsales.com.au and www.autotrader.com.au

Toyota and mitsubishi are reasonable too.

I have read somewhere that there are 'goverment auctions' where they sell the vehicles pretty cheap it may be worth looking into . when we were in Brisbane we had a look at cars ,prices etc,if your going for a brand new one they are similar price to here ,it is second hand ones that seem to hold their value but people do keep their cars longer in Oz than here as the lifespan of the car is greater ,no rust etc ,,,hope this helps and as pernilla said Holden look good,,,

IanL is an unknown quantity at this point
Another thing you should be aware of in NSW (can't speak for the other states) when you buy a second hand car you must pay 2.75% (may have gone up to 3% now) of the car's purchase price as a Transfer Fee, plus about $30 Stamp duty to get it registered in your name.

If you buy private you can get lessen the impact by putting down that you bought it for less than you did, however write it down too much and the RTA will get suss and apply market rates anyway.

If you buy second hand from a dealer then there is no way around it AFAIK. You have 14days to transfer your car else a fine of approx $80 applies (plus the fee of course).

You cannot say that the car is a gift, well you can but you'll still pay the fee. However spouses can transfer vehicles owned by themselves to each other for a fee of $27.
