      Shipping wicker, woods etc

      HI all,

What do I need to do to my wicker baskets and laundry hamper to ship them to Oz? Is it even worth the effort, or should I turf them and get new when I arrive? Also have an old painting on wood from Santorini - would that be subject to anything do you think?

      Thanks :)

Nope we are even getting rid of our moses basket (donation to womens aid and the DV unit) . Not worth sending anything thats a risk. My sister had to pay to have some chairs fumigated due to the wicker. Cost a fortune! not worth the hassle.

I totally agree. We have various wicker, seagrass, etc. type baskets, all going to have to go to a new UK home. Also got a pine farmhouse dining table with chairs, chairs have wicker type seats, not even going to entertain shipping these either. Rather take a hit on the cost over here and get some cash for them than pay for fumigating etc. in Oz.

We have had the same issue and are just selling some lovely dining chairs I bought in Heals because they have wicker backs to them.
All the basket work is going to be left behind...and even our table mats which are the rolled bamboo type ones.........Its not worth taking a chance on wicker and basket work. There is a risk that they will charge for fumigating but it could delay the whole shipment as they will check for other things as well

We were told by all the sales people that came around absolutely no wicker. The packers on the day told us they pack wicker all rhe time, so our hampers came and went through no problem.

Thats my experience , others may have had a different experience !

This is very interesting ....we have Crown around tomorrow so will ask and push as we love our chairs and didn't want to leave behind......and we think they have been treated anyway with a coating and have always been indoor furniture, not like garden or conservatory stuff.

I am happy to get rid of our baskets/ wicker only really a laundry basket and a couple of storage baskets. But I am worried about a couple of items we got for our wedding and on our honeymoon. We got given a little wooden chest. It is a lightweight wood, not sure what type. It's varnished on the outside but the inside it bare (not treated I think) then we also got some african wooden masks whilst in Zambia. They are tribal masks and again they are varnished on the face but the rear is not treated. Is there a way of treating them as I would be devastated if they got taken away. What happens with other wooden furniture is there something we should d to it before shipping? For example I know one of my units attracts woodlice as i keep finding piles of dead ones under it ????? I can't see any damage to it through them, I am not even sure woodlice normally like wooden furniture, may just be coincidence. But obviously concerned that this will cause problems when we move.

If you don't love the item get rid of it. If you do love the item then take it but be prepared to loose it or pay to gave it treated. Generally though it is always advised not to take it.

We were told no wicker by Crown. The dog's wicker toy basket was accidentally packed... complete with dog treats in there too! The box was opened on arrival, the dog treats were taken but nothing at all was said about the wicker basket they were in! Gutted, cause I gave all my other wicker baskets to my mum and would have loved to have brought them too.
