      Who are you flying with?

I flew Emirates from Glasgow to Brisbane in Nov 2010...In addition to all your normal baggage allowances, Emirates let you take a set of golf clubs up to 15Kg free of charge! Yes. Free.

I was going to put mine in my shared container, but I could get them to Oz quicker and free by taking them with me.

Thanks George D i tried the link you sent and it looks as though we could take them with us. That was really helpful. I'm now wondering if I could maybe take my husbands golf clubs on my ticket but I'm not sure that would work??

Each traveller can take one set, so two travellers can have two!

Assuming you are flying from Glasgow with Emirates...When you go to Glasgow Airport you'll bring it in with the rest of your luggage. Get a trolley. Check in and the staff member there will tell you to go to the Oversize baggage check in (at the far left hand side facing the check in desks at International Departures) You'll need to lift them onto the conveyor belt. No big deal, you won't be carrying them after that. If you aren't doing a stopover in Dubai or Singapore with Emirates (staying the night in those cities) then you can check your bags all the way through to Brisbane. The next time you see the golf clubs is on the baggage conveyor belt in Brisbane. Get a trolley and lift them off the conveyor belt. That's pretty much your heavy work all done. They really, really weren't a problem for me to transport (and I was travelling alone)

You do need to declare them at customs...sporting goods. They will want to see how clean everything is to make sure there is no dirt/soil/grass on the clubs or golf shoes. They'll inspect them if you send them by courier or container as well, so this isn't a big deal. Scrub the actual clubs as clean as possible making sure there is no debris. Turn the bag upside down and get all the little bits out. They asked me to show them a club, which I did and it was clean, they then asked to see my golf shoes...I said I hadn't brought any as I needded new ones and was going to buy new ones. They were satisfied with that and I was on my merry way in less than a minute. If you are taking shoes...make sure tehy are scubbed and absolutely spotless. Make sure you declare spoting goods...it's not as if they are hard to see!

I wouldn't hesitate to take a set of clubs on the Glasgow-Brisbane route with Emirates again. It's really easy and no hassle at all. Just make sure they are secure (does the bag have a hood? If not, get one) Mine were all safe and sound at the other end. And make sure the people picking you up have space in their car for all your luggage!

I'd second this. They did a similar thing to me when I flew to Aus last time with my clubs. get out a toothbrush and some water and clean the faces of the clubs. Just remember that customs are not there to get people in trouble, they are there to protect Australia from foreign pests and disease. So tell them you have the clubs, make sure they are clean, tell them you've been very meticulousness with your cleaning, and all should be well. Good luck!
