My brother and his family have been over in Adelaide for about 6 weeks now!!! So am trying to help out - or interfere as Aunts do - could any of you furnish me with information website or contact details for work for my nephew. He is 18 - living in the Rynella area and seeking employment just for some extra pennies and also to get him socialising and owta the house...............................stacking shelves, any shop work, labouring, cleaning cars, .....................................any info appreciated!!!! Cheerio - we await your many, many replies...................
I know this sounds obvious but the government job web page is where I look for future (maybe)jobs?Other than that the newspaper,and usually what I did in Oz,just go into a place of work and ask.....Hope all goes well for him!!

If he got off his b*m and went down the street he could land himself a job within a morning. Nothing magical about it, just type up a resume with some references if he has them, dress a bit smart and knock on doors. Most of the retail places in Canberra have "staff wanted" posters up at the moment and you can walk through the local mall and see easily 20 of them without looking, I imagine Adelaide wouldnt be that different. Maccas is always looking and he could do a lot worse than be trained by them. If he fancies hospitality he should check out the local TAFE and get himself on a bar course or something. If he hasnt got a job it is because he hasnt tried. Presentation, enthusiasm, references, manners are all essential ingredients.

It just so annoys me on here when people pass such personal and sarcastic comments - and I am now sure another torrent of abuse will follow with my reply here once I press the return key!!!!!

roamtreemj:You're welcome to the advice,your nephew can (if they have internet)look any time on that goverment job page (not sure of the address,perhaps just google in "Jobs in Australia"its bound to come up,but its really useful as its like looking at the job centre cards but on the internet.Can I please just say something in Quoll's defence?I know the way Quoll has put her reply may be seen in some way rude?I don't know I did'nt find it that way but Quoll has lived in Oz a long time (as I have)and we tend to pick up the aussie way of saying things (I know I have often upset people on this forum)so when Quoll says for example "Get off his bum"she kind of means it in a friendly affectionate way not in a hurtful way.Alot of aussies have a straight forward way of putting things and I am quite sure quoll would'nt of meant her comments to be seen as rude?Some people I guess when they move to Oz might be quite shocked the way aussies put things but you get used to it lol.Anyway enough rant from me,I do hope your nephew finds a job soon,I'm sure he will pet xxxx

I do apologize it certainly wasnt my intention to character assassinate - still not sure how I have done that. If there are extenuating circumstances about why a healthy intelligent 18 year old is not able to get out and find a job in a climate of low unemployment then I really am sorry. For most 18 year olds it really is a case of a boot in the rear end as many would much rather sit at home on the computer and they need a bit of tough love and initiative. It was not my intention to be either personal or sarcastic just realistic (and believe it or not, helpful!) - I am sorry that you have chosen to interpret it as a torrent of abuse. Not much I can do about that I'm afraid.

My daughter is 18 and has really struggled to find work (any),she is intelligent with good education and has applied for anything.............Just landed a part time job that may lead to full after 5 months.I've been with her every step of the way.

Good to hear your daughter landed with a job - .............................. all I was trying to do was help my nephew and this place was just a small stepping stone in my quest!!!! And maybe I am a little sensitive but its not very nice for someone to say 'get off his b*m' - 'nothing magical about it' - we just feel its a bit tough when he has moved country, is only 18 - lost his friends from the UK through a family decision............................and his confidence is not at the highest. Perhaps its just us and yourself included ....who can recognise such hardship. Anyway I am over to Aus in 2009 to live with my children of various ages and wont be asking Mr Canberra for any help or advice - because he is obviously of the generation where you should 'get on your bike and find work..............- Mr Tebbit!!! - why did he ever leave Chingford????

My daughter is over the moon with he new job.It's in photography which she loves.It is only casual but hopefully will lead to permanent.
Worried as she starts tomorrow and has a really bad cold - poor kid.
This is after a lot of door knocking, CV dropping,online searches.
Fingers crossed for your nephew - it does change their lives once they feel "Wanted"
