Smile Moved to adelaide? your opinons please on it.

We are looking at moving to Adelaide if we can accepted into oz. Has anyone moved there and have any feedback. The house prices look reasonable in price. I have school age children my oldest has learning difficulties so need to find if there are good schools around. My partner is a diesel mechanic, is also a tellecommunications engineer and also will be a plasterer by time we move. I am a qualified social worker.

Any advice on job situation here would also be useful.

many thanks in advance.

Hi There!

We are in Adelaide and absolutely love it!!

Real estate is starting to climb a little and nothing really stays on the market for long!

Depending on where you want to live we are in the south of adelaide,Happy Valley and it is on the base of the foothills and we back onto a golf course it is so pretty!

Schools are a plenty and i do know that St Martin De Porre and Woodcroft College have a great program for challenged Children!!

Facilities down south are huge so you really never have to go int CBD for anything!!

Can't help much on the job front I'm afraid, although it sounds like your OH has all bases covered!

We've been here almost two years and are having a great time. I find money a bit tight, but then I guess it might help if I stopped all the volunteer work and went into paid employment! Volunteering is a way of life here and many of the 'school hours' jobs are actually fulfilled by volunteers - including the old fall-back, dinner lady and teacher's aid! There is a fair bit of networking, which is great once you know people but a bit frustrating if you don't! That said, there is plenty of work around especially if you are prepared to be flexible, and networking happens everywhere I guess.

The schools are like anywhere..some better than others, some seen as less desirable because of the catchment area. Special needs seem to be catered for in a similar vein to the UK...ie. funding can be hard, specially if they believe your child can manage in mainstream (and I know mainstream schools that include kids with ADD/ADHD, some forms of autism etc) with occasional help from an SSO. There are some excellent schools around, and one of the leading lights seems to be the Pasedena High Unit (not just saying that 'cos I help out there!). The places at that school are fought over, partly because they cater for children with an IQ of 70 or below, partly because there aren't that many schools like it and people will travel some 60km to attend! Once there, students follow the same curriculum as in the main school (although obviously pitched at an appropriate level for each student) and are taught skills to enable them to live life to the fullest. They mingle with mainstream, and see themselves very much as one school. Severe multiple disabilities are catered for at Ashford, and that seems lovely too. I don't know how old your oldest is, but I know at my son's primary school (goes up to age 13/14 and year 7), children who need extra help in a particular area are given it, even if it means they attend the special class on a temporary basis.

That's pretty much it I'm afraid. I hope that helps a bit and I haven't just gone on one of my usual rambles.... I can't compare Adelaide to any other state as we've only lived here, but life is good.

Hi
We lived in sydney for a year and perth for a year then returned to uk. If we were to return to oz wondering about Adelaide has anybody been to other states to offer comparisons. Any advice would be helpful.
Jacqui
