Planning to move to Adelaide

We (family) have just received our PR under subclass 190 for SA. Myself, wife and two son (age 17 and 14) are planning to be in Adelaide in July 2015 for 8 days to validate our visa. Could anyone please guide us on the following:

1) Do we need to register on centerlink for all four of us or only the primary applicant on the PR.

2) Do we need to enroll all member of the family for Medicare during our this visit or we need to do it once we plan our migration to SA i.e. in May 2016.

3) We need to get a private health insurance (like from Bupa) when we finally move to SA in May 2016. As have heard from many that its better to get an additional private health insurance for the 1st year. Does this 1st year starts from the date of enrollment in Medicare (which in our case would be July 2015 when we come for validation of visa) or from date we finally migrate to SA which is May 2016.

4) For obtaining Tax File No., do we need to do it when we come for validation of visa or later on when we finally migrate to SA.

Appreciate your feedbacks.

You don't need to do any of this until you actually move, and as a PR you do not have to have private medical insurance but can take it out if you want to. You would be advised however to take out ambulance cover as they charge you if you need to use one (and even if you don't if someone calls one out for you).

Hi, welcome to the forum but most importantly congratulations on the visa. Don't forget to join the Adelaide forum http://www.pomsinadelaide.com it is our sister forum.

1) Centrelink it will be you and your wife who will register.

2) If you are only here for 8 days I would probably wait as you all need to go in with your visa they then give you a temp number and they usually post your cards out 10-14 days later. Although having them ASAP will help you with 100 point checks when applying for rentals etc.

3) Do you need private health insurance as part of your visa, as you are on PR i wouldn't think it is needed. You are moving to Adelaide and I have heard there are excellent specialists there so personally I don't think you need it. I never had it in Melbourne, in Cairns I do because we don't have enough specialists and I often have to travel for treatment. You usually find health insurance runs from January to December. If you do sign up you have a 12 month waiting period for any pre existing conditions.

4) Again you can do it online once you are here but this can take longer to come through than medicare so unless you have relatives whose address you can put down I would wait until you come back.

One thing I would do, if you open an account online with NAB they will have your bank cards ready for you to pickup when you arrive. The other banks you usually have to go in for them to see the ID then they order your cards so again you may not get them in time if you use a different bank.
