Hi Kiki

We came here because of our visa. The other cities in Oz we have been too are Melbourne and Sydney and we weren't too keen as they are a bit big for us. I think a lot of people choose Adelaide (from those who I have spoken too) because it feels very family orientated. It looks nice as there are hills to one side and miles of golden sandy beach to the other. If I had not found a job then we would have had to move on, however I would have done it with a heavy heart as we do really like it here and the people are really friendly. But sadly if you do come here there is a very annoying Lazy Cow who drives everyone mad, but then again there are lunatics wherever you go.

We chose Adelaide because it is not too big and still quite relaxed. We also got more for our money here.

I love the change of seasons and could not live in a constant or humid atmosphere.

Hi Kimberley!

We chose Adelaide because it was one of the places we were offered. We've been to Melbourne and didn't feel it was for us..though it is very nice (she added hastily! Yes, I'm scared of you Victorians!). Then it came down to the fact that Adelaide is pretty small and it seemed community orientated. The beaches are close, as are the hills, the bush etc. There are some amazing places to see and we enjoy living here. Ooh wash my mouth out! I seem to be agreeing with Mrs TinFeet.

But that's us. What are you looking for? Perhaps you could say, then people could tell you how their state would fit your criteria. Like a job interview for states.

LC.

I'm going to have a lie down now. I feel all serious and

Hi All

Thanks for replies..Although we are still only at the TRA stage we hope to be going to Oz on a 136 visa. Hubbys a plumber.
The things that attract me to Adelaide are :
1. getting more home for your money.
2. the family feel people talk about
3. because its smaller and hopefully looking to grow.
Things that make me hesistant:
1. The weather, I like it hot but I know I have to think of the kids So how cold does it get England cold??
2. Hubbys a plumber how easy is it to get started and whats the job situation like.
3. Is Adelaide way behind the times.
4. Does everyone go beacuse its the only place they can and leave as soon as they can.

We have been looking at places to live like Happy Valley and most recently Seaford. Any details on the latter and schooling would be great.

Thanks everyone for your time much appreciated.

Hi KiKi
I do not live in Adelaide I'm still here waiting to go (fingers crossed), like your OH mine is a Plumber too come refrigeration engineer/air con.
We are like you split between Brisbane and Adelaide, I have family in both parts.

My sister says when it gets cold in Adelaide your just need a sweatshirt on at certain times in the day but no big coats/jackets like here. When we visited Adelaide there was hailstones (it was xmas/new year time) the hailstone were huge but still the sky was sunny and the day wasn't even cold!!

At the moment I believe that SA government have put a msg out for Plumbers, Painters and decorators, carpenters and refrigeration engineers as there is a huge demand for these skills in SA and they are even willing to sponsor.

Personally I loved Adelaide, I thought it had a great community feel about it and it wasn't to far behind in times (just nicely so!). It has a lovely CBD where the shopping I thought was good and there was no driving through the middle of it and they had all these market stalls selling hand crafted gifts and lotions and potions for the skin.

My sister is in the process of going thru planning at the moment to open her own indoor play centre there.

At Glenelg (not sure spelt that right), the beach is lovely and they have restaurants along the beach and an indoor entertainment centre i.e. play area for children, water slides and merry go round, the centre looked fairly new.

Not sure when you are going and if your husband does refrigeration work but my sister sent us an advert for a job a while ago which was interesting.

Kiki your OH will be fine and Plumbers are on the demand list for SA under their govenment announcement.

Gd luck
x

Hi Kimberley

Have you still not decided.... come to Brisbane with us you know you want to.

As for the TRA ours was 28 days I dont think you have quite waited long enough but let us know immediately you get the result, my fingers have been crossed since I saw you and they are beginning to ache now.

Seriously though I hear Adelaide is lovely I think I told you we have a contact in Adelaide with construction business who may be hiring or knows someone who is. Adelaide keeps popping into my mind because we have him to fall back on if Neil cant find job.

Good luck anyway with your decision and let us know when you get the result of your TRA

Hi kiki, I'll give you my point of view on your questions hopefully someone else will add there bits too.

Certain areas you get more home for your money, depending on what you had in the UK though. Like everywhere house prices are rising.

Adelaide has a Mediterranean climate. However at night the temperatures drop really quickly and by quiet a lot. So first thing in a morning and as evening falls it gets cold, but then during the day the temperature rises again and if you started the day with a coat you'll soon loose it.

Have heard more good stories than bad about plumbers, however I only know a couple of them.

Adelaide is behind the times on some of their attitudes ie shop closed for bank holidays, we could do with more competition with the food shopping, but can't think of anything else.

The people I have heard about who have left have done so more because of money. The wages in Adelaide seem to be less here than in other states, yet the house prices are rising so when you are getting paid in dollars it becomes difficult to make ends meet. However if you don't over stretch yourself with your mortgage then the cost of living seems very good.

Hope that helps or perhaps it has made you more unsure.
One thing I know for sure is that Loopey Cow is oh so very lazy.

I've heard that one too!!

I get really cold in the evenings and really early in the morning. The temperature is easily overcome though - fans/cooling on the hottest days, double-duvets/heaters/blankets on the cold ones. And no, not England-cold though it feels like it at times!

Is Adelaide way behind the times? Hmmn, considering many people come here in the hope it is....but as Kdal said, 'nicely so'. (IMO). SA is looking to grow, although I have to say I prefer it as it is!

Lastly, I listened to a report ages ago from an expert (?!) who stated that house prices here actually work out more expensive than many other states because the wages are less in comparison. Obviously bringing money over means you have a head start, so that is perhaps less of a consideration, depending if you need a mortgage or not. Our mortgage costs us a bigger percentage of our income than a similar sized one did in the UK. But we manage, just about , so what the heck!

We came over on a government sponsored visa, and it certainly made things easy. For example there was no hassle about points, and the whole process seemed smoother. Oh and we were given permanent residency, which was nice.

Can't think of anything else and the dogs need a walk and I'm helping out at school, so TTFN!

Yours hastily-cos-I've-just-seen-the-time,

LC
