Cold and Dull?

Those of you that have seen my other posts will know that I am thinking primarily of Brisbane as a place for my family to settle. This is mainly driven by rumour and conjucture about all sorts of things, and also by Mrs Imp wanting to live somewhere sunny!

Now I am not particularly a party animal and do not need to live anywhere too exciting and Adelaide seems soooooo reasonably priced for Real Estate compared to other places.

I have heard it described as a good place to be very young and a good place to be old, but what about the middle bit?

The climate is described frequently as 'mediterranean', but what exactly does that mean in comparison to Blighty? Will Mrs Imp still get to wear a bikini on the beach most of the year?

Personally, I am looking to relax for a long while once I leave here, watching my children grow up with all the opportunities Oz offers. I am not into big cities in any way at all (internet shopping is the best thing ever), so I am not fussed, but can those of you that are there give us a perspective please?

I suppose we will use all the info you give us to plan shortlists for any holidays we take before we move full time.

Hi big imps and little imps

The house prices in Adelaide are rising, the reason why people struggle in Adelaide is that the wages are less here and don't match the rise in house prices. But if you are coming over £ rich and hope to have a low mortgage then you will be laughing

As for the night life for the younger people I have heard that you can enjoy a good night here although I know of some young peeps who like to hit Melbourne for a weekend. There is a massive selection of good restaurants here and that is a big part of the socialising scene.

As for the weather think of Tenerife, but often a lot hotter in summer, but less rain unfortunately although we've had some today (Yippee). On a night in a winter it gets very cold but then during the day the temperature shoots up again, although you don't see many people in bikinis on the beach in winter. I do wear a coat in the morning and evening but not very often during the day unless we are out walking and the wind has picked up especially near the coast and in the hills.

Adelaide is a big city, not sure where you are now. That was one thing that surprised us when we came just how big it is, and there are plenty of shops. If we set off from one side and drive to the other it would take a good 90 minutes and that's on a good day. We have friends in the hills and it takes us an hour to get there from the seafront.

Hope my waffling has helped a little.

Very much, thank you.

Do you reckon £240k would get us a pad within 10 minutes of the beach and a golf course? (I added that last bit, Mrs Imp does not care about the golf!)

Hi Mr Imp

Just done a search for you on Realestate.com.au, put in a variety of suburbs that are along the coast. Anyway they seem to be coming out at around the low to mid $300 or in the high $200 obviously the further out you go or the less popular the area then the price comes down. Hope that helps a bit. As for the golf courses there are quiet a few dotted about all over the place so I think you'll be fine on that score. I doubt you'd have have to pull your trolley.

You could get a nice place in Perth for that, you might even get a pool. Don't be put of by the people who say they hate Perth, it's great.

Your wife would love the weather and the beaches.

If you are happy with a 10minute drive to the beach, you have many more options available to you. £240 is loads!!! How about Flagstaff/Aberfoyle/the new place off Black Road which is right near two golf clubs/driving ranges, and less than ten mins from the sea?

My kids are still to young to care, but I do wonder just how much there is to do for older teens etc around Adelaide. I mean I know there's loads to do - from parks (skate/bmx/animal/walking), to ice rinks, laser zones, cinemas, theatres, always some festival or another, racing etc etc - but there don't seem to be as many clubs as I grew up with (used to go up to London), and those there are seem to be in the centre of Adelaide. Not a problem to get to them, just a few problems around them, if you know what I mean. Mind you, I guess that's the same anywhere. I'm just older now and realise I'm no longer invulnerable!

We love Adelaide and wouldn't want to be anywhere else, but I'm sure /hope! that people from the less fortunate states love their lives too. It's all down to personal preference!

As for wearing a bikini through the year*...I would imagine it won't take you too long before you're decrying temperatures as low as 19C, and wouldn't even consider wearing anything less than heavy jumpers from autumn to spring inc!

LC
* I actually do wear a bikini throughout the year, but under many many layers of clothing. After I received that anonymous petition....

Why are you always trying to get people to come and live near you? It is slightly worrying. We are across the other side of the city from you, we did that as we'd heard about your reputation even before we'd met you!!! The streaking is a real problem, why you never put your udders away in public is a real concern to me, now there's one in the eye for yer!

Imppy, if you are undecided on 2 different places I would be tempted to have a look at them both first as they both have loads to offer. What is good for one family is not always good for another. I know the reason why a lot of people choose Adelaide is because they feel it is a good place to raise your kids or calves, depending on who you are talking too.

Mrs TinB
Don't worry about LC and me, hope we don't scare you off as we like to take the **&^ out of each other, we are sad and it helps to pass the time.

A: Desperation. And the knowledge that more people in the area will push prices up. I can then sell and live somewhere nice. OR, because it's the best place3 AND nowhere near you! Take your pick!

B: But you're my bestest fwenddddd

I'll settle with nowhere near us, if that's ok? Don't want our house prices to drop!
