my opinion wont be popular amongst the dreamers......but......

should you go to the other side of the world - remember those holidays you cudnt wait to get home from - without first having seen for yourself ??? hell of a gamble if you hubby or the kids are not happy a nd consider the loss of money and getting back onto housing market in the uk - it really is NOT a dream on a plate

hell of a risk imho

brisbane - ask do you really want t o live in hot weather often humid and uncomfortable

of all the cities perth was lovely and our favourite but weve plummed for adelaide for the climatic and future growth we anticipate around the sa region - more a large town feel 25 years ago feel

keep having reality checks - we are 6 weeks away from committing to go in august even now we may pull out as we have so much going for us in the uk - we are perhaps in the minority that we are not bemoaning about the negatives of the uk - its just the pull of the surf that eats away at my heart

some say follow your heart but i say follow the family

all the best wotever route / poth you may t ake

Hello Muppetbro

Interested to know, have you been to Melbourne?

We are thinking it's between Adelaide and Melbourne, but at the moment swaying more to Melbourne. Never been to either (or Australia). It's really expensive to go on a holiday first when you have children. The best we can do is read lots of books and do as much research as possible and hopefully we will get the destination right!

you misinterpret me monsieur

australia is a nation full of imho the perfect integration of many cultures, religions, etc - for those not been we e stimated 1/2 caucasian people in the cities - wonderful mix of people living in harmony - down to one thing a successful immigration policy - need i compare to the state of the uk situation and anger felt in m any areas as to the farcical situation we are now in need to the abuse of many things within t he uk d ue to s tupid policies based o n human rights.....zzzz

it is the people of australia that impreesed upon us so much not the unique fauna flora or landscapes - to be honest the landscapes imho cannot be classed as diversified as the uk - imaging nothing changing for a 6 hour drive on a straight road - hit the nullabor and make that 16 plus hours ;)

the climate well for holidays make no mistake queensland but hell i cudnt not want to live in a a climate so hot year round hence the south - melbournes climate sometimes is regarded as 4 seasons in a day but you will get the s easonal varaitions for sure - adelaide will be a compromise - last august we spent our research trip wearing coats wrapped u p on many days whilst s ome days shorts tee shirts when it reached 19 degrees - usually 14 degrees and we were told during our stay the weather had been nicer than of late - only down side is the summer temps when they hit 40 degrees - over 28 degrees does not rock my boat - remember you a re going out t o work in this heat to work - how quickly the novelty will wear off

re the trip to go out- that is the prolem it is indeed costly especially for taking kids as well -the danger even of a short recce trip is you go in holiday mode and dont take realistic viewpoints on things - standard of living is NOT cheaper than uk as you wull be working in $ not £ and you will generally earn less money overall - as teachers we are likely going to earn about £6-7 k less each!!! think about that........

however the sa area housing market - well 5 years from now it will probably catch up with perth more people more house more wealth more schools more jobs......we are trying to give ourselves the best chance to be prepared to lessen the upheaval

i think australia is the most desireable place in the world to raise up my kids - clean environmentally aware nation the wit of t he oz fits in with my wit - good or bad u decide - the climate and most of all the surf is world class which has been my lifelong passion

what im trying to say is i regard the uk as having some of the best systems in place - nhs. education etc etc - think carefully when you say its not - overlaod crowding = things go wrong here but they remain the models of the world - i dislike our winters but love our summers here will miss t he beauty of our varied landscape and desperately miss that 5 pm saturday feeling of l istening to the results

keep it real as much as i love australia and australians - despite the obesity crisis down under - yeh you dont r eally think they are a s uper nation of athletes do you / think america and australia is close behind - so theres plenty for us pommes to identify with

i cud go on - keep it all in perspective - feel free to ask me anything - what youll get is my perspective cos i think its important people know its a roller coaster emotional ride and we are still 3 weeks from signing t he house away - if that falls thru then we aint going - thats howundesperate w e are b ut we remain excited nonetheless august 18th w e go

we also know its a long swim full of sharks

Hi Kiki

We have lived in Adelaide for 17 months now and have settled really well. I am stuggling to get a job and sadly if I cannot find one by the end of the year we are thinking of moving interstate somewhere. I would be sad to leave here as it is a very family orientated place. At one side we have lovely hills and at the other side miles and miles of beautiful beaches. There is always something free going on run by the different councils in the city. Today we have been watching the World Police/Firefighter games all free and tomorrow we are going to the kite festival at Semaphore. The best thing about it is when you leave there isn't litter left all over the place. These are just a few of the reasons why we love it here. When we take the dog out or a walk everyone says good morning, people are so friendly and the people in the shops are really nice and polite. I could go on as there are many positive sides, there are bad areas and bad things do happen here, but you get that wherever you go. I know more happy poms here than un-happy. Yes it's not an easy ride, but then we never thought it would be easy. We followed our hearts and our dreams and I am so glad we came, I would have hated to get to 60 thinking if only we'd tried.

Bye for now
Mrs TinB :D

Hello Tinbasher
Interested to know what job are you looking for in Adelaide?

I accept the comments made by Muppetbro, but although we to love England for many different reasons, we are thinking about what future England has to offer our children.

Hi All

Thanks for getting back and replying. I too wonder what job Mrs TinB is looking for. Is there a Mr TinB what does he do. My OH is a plumber, I have recently visited the other forum and are feeling slightly alarmed at how hard it may be to get work. My OH has no problem doing extra training or whatever job till he gets a good one. But I have to say it all seems quite a struggle. Its not putting us off though!!

Love to hear more comments.

Hi Kiki, New to the forum so HELLO to everyone. We visted Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide over christmas and the new year. There are different things we liked about the different places, we did not have fantastic weather so can't comment on how humid Brisbane can be as it rained (but was still nice and warm). I loved Adelaide it really does have a family feel about it, I believe it is the town of Festivals and it is so easy (I thought) to find your way about. My OH is also a Plumber come Refrigeration, air con Engineer. Today we went to the EXPO in London in the hope that someone could put us in the right directions for jobs, but to be honest it was a bit of a waste of time, there were alot of agencies there. It does appear that when our OH's first go to Australia that they will not beable to work straight away they have to get the local states certicates but the agency did say that my OH could then work alongside a fully trained tradesman until his gets his own certificates the money won't be very good. I have family in Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne so if I can find out any answers to any questions that you may have, no probs just let me know? Anyway love Adelaide and felt so at home there, but on the other hand felt there might be more opportunities for my boys whom are 13 and 15 in Brisbane!
Good luck and hope you find the answers to your questions!

What did you think of Melbourne in comparrison to the other cities?

Just interested to know why that isn't an option for you.

Hi Tracy, My aunt and uncle, cousin and Nan live in Melbourne so it must be good!! Don't know why but we just didn't get the feel for it (silly I know). It could have been something to do with the fact it was half way around our trip and we were worn out!! One day the weather was so hot and the next day it could be windy and raining. We went to a couple of beaches which were beautiful and you can see why people like to life there, but I don't know if it was just when we were there but they had so many fly's it was unbelievable, you couldn't talk incase you swallowed one! We also got there just after the bush fires were being put out so it was hazy from the smoke still (you could see this fog all the time). All in all we were tired and the flies and fog didnt help, we probably just visited at the wrong time. Friends of a friend fly out to Melbourne tomorrow to live, so as I say it can't be bad, but we just didn't get the feel for it!!
Regards Kdalx
