moving to adelaide

i have just been granted my visa and will be going to adelaide with my wife and three daughters in 2006,we are trying to decide if it will be worth shipping our furniture etc over ,what we need to know is if its worth paying to take our stuff or better to buy new when we arrive ,someone told us that some things are expensive but the prices dont seem that different to the uk ,or is it that the wages are lower in aus ,any help would be apprecia

Hi Paul,
We have sold almost everything we own. We have only kept personal, sentimental items and the childrens toys and games (needed to help the children settle quickly). We had the removal folk over and the small amount we wanted to ship would have cost over £2500. We balanced the value of our things if we sold them and then buy new over there against the cost of shipping. We decided to only ship the essentials. We were told to work on £5 per cubic foot (they still work in old money) plus an extra few hundred pounds to ship. The removers come into your house and pack everything and then hold it in storage until you are ready to move. It can then take about 3 months to get over there.
We hope to be going to Adelaide early next year (myself and twin sons aged 12). Let me know how you're getting on.

We hope to be in Adelaide by Easter 2006 and are planning on taking all our bits with us. We were thinking of selling some stuff here but a few people said we could get more for them in Oz.

It may be that the furniture doesn't go with a modern house, but on the other hand there will be so much you are trying to do that to have to start from scratch with everything could add to the stress load. Our plan is to take it and then replace as and when. Also think it will help the kids to settle having their things around.

thanks for the replies,we are going to an australian migration expo in earls ct at the weekend ,looks good lots of info on jobs,moving companies,financial advice etc - its at the hotel ibis,47 lillie rd,earls ct if its any help to anybody
