Christies Beach area is in the "not such a good area" category. Higher unemployment, out of control youth. Housing not so nice. Really quite a feral area. (Not nice, I'm sorry.) It is about 25kms south of the city. The beach though, is quite nice. There are nicer areas to live.

Aldinga Beach is along the same lines, just not quite as bad as Christies. It is probably 40 kms south of the city. It does though have a beautiful beach. Housing along the beach front and a street or two back are nice, but further back the standard deteriorates. Area has a lot of wineries and vineyards.

I am an Australian, lived in Adelaide all my life. Hope this is helpful.

Aldinga Beach is fine. I lived there in 1976 for a few months and still drive thro' the place when in my Post Office van to pick mail up.
You'll find you won't mind the long commute into the city at first . . . . about 50 mins . . . but when you see others getting home in 35 mins. you may regret living so far south of Adelaide. It feels a bit like living in Brighton and commuting into London, if you're familiar with that part of the U.K.
It has a modern shopping centre with about a dozen shops supplying the basic needs, but for bigger items than the day to day goodies you'll have to travel to Collonades Shopping Centre . . . about 10 miles north into Adelaide . . . or even Marion Shopping Centre with its 200+ shops and stores all under cover and air conditoned.
The lifestyle at Aldinga is pretty laid back with the long golden sand beach at hand. If you like surfing or swimming in the sea this is your spot!
My wife and I have wetsuits and go a few miles north of Aldinga at Noarlunga a couple of times a year. That is a beach with a jetty going out about 400 yards out to a reef 20' deep and a mile long, running parallel to the coastline. The fish there must be pretty tame as you can get fish about a foot long in shoals swimming alongside you, all different colours.

I thought I should get back to you and suggest a few nicer areas than Christies Beach. I wouldn't rule out Aldinga Beach area, it would be best for you to check that out for yourself, because there are parts that don't look too flash.

If you want to be along the coast, you could look at Seaford Rise, which is located between Christies Beach and Aldinga and up on a cliff overlooking Moana beach. Another nice area is at Hallett Cove, north of Christies Beach.

Areas in the southern foothills which are nice are Belair, Blackwood, Glenalta, Flagstaff Hill, Bellevue Heights and parts of Aberfoyle Park. These areas are a 10-15 minute drive to the beaches from Seacliff to Brighton, then along to Glenelg.

Along the coast and in the hills is a bit cooler in summer. We do have beautiful beaches, my favourite is Port Willunga, which is close to Aldinga.

Hope this info is useful.

Thanks HBEE - nice to have some clear cut advice, although everyone has their own opinion as to whats good/bad. Several of the areas we are considering are in your list of good places, so thats reassuring!

Cheers!
