Hi,

My husband and myself moved to Australia about 2 months ago and we are finding it hard to settle here, we are staying with friends an do know some people here although my husband a carpenter is really struggling to find work and we are hoping to settle down and have family in time, we visited the Barossa and Adelaide when we were traveling 5 years ago and think it would be a lovely place to settle and have family, its just so hard deciding to make the move and knowing what to do, has anyone moved to Adelaide or the area or know whether there is more work available?

Hi Ange,

You may well be better off posting or at least reading over on our sister site, PIA as its for Adelaide and SA. http://www.pomsinadelaide.com/forum/forum.php

I can't tell you about the work situation as we are not over there yet but PIA will have some posts on carpenters and other work.

As for a place to live, if you've been there and liked it and are not settling in Melbourne, it may well be more suited to you. We are heading there next year as its my husbands home town. He grew up there and I've visited it a fair few times and we both want to be there and let our son spend some years growing up there.

We like the south side of Adelaide, from Glenelg down but many people live in the northern suburbs. Depends where you work really and what you want from living there. Cost wise there are some suburbs way more expensive than others and some areas have a fairly decent Brit contingent.

Some people struggle to make friends and so on, but that happens anywhere you move to. The PIA site as a thread for a monthly meet up that is run by a couple of forum members, one Sunday every month, all welcome. Its been going a fair while now, all year round and is popular. Lots of new arrivals to Adelaide meet other Brits there and at least have a bit of social get together and hopefully will meet others through it.

As for bringing up kids there, its one of our main reasons to live there. We like its not a huge city, that it is on the gulf so the water and beaches are lovely and its generally not so expensive as Sydney, Melbourne or Perth. Sure its quieter and the CBD is smaller, but honestly, we live in a town with a couple of thousand people here in the UK and are used to living rural with neighbours a couple of miles away and so on so it doesn't worry us. We don't want bright lights or insane partying.

Drop me a PM if there is anything I can help with, happy to try to help :)

  • 2 months later...

We were originally going to go to Adelaide but changed our minds and came to Melbourne (my fault).

We visited Adelaide after 6 months and loved it, we were gutted!

We vowed to move there but it never happened and now we are going home.

See my old (but legendary) thread MELBOURNE SMELLS for my opinions on Victorias capital.

Go for it...move now....!!

Hi

Ange

I do a lot of work with migrants particularly from the UK. In my humble opinion

you could do a lot worse than living in Adelaide.

As snifter said Glenelg and the Suburbs south of there are pretty safe and your

family will be able to access all of Adelaide’s great beaches. In fact a lot of

the English people I have assisted to find work in Adelaide have move to

Hallett Cove. They all seem to be attracted to the quarter acre block and

houses that are reasonably new. Plus it is easy to access major shopping

district and the fabulous Mclaren Vale wine district. As far as work goes I am

pretty confident your hubby will find work, the Building industry is pretty

slow at the moment there is quite a few mining and Fly in Fly out prospects you

husband may wish to consider. And i suspect construction will be picking up as

the warmer weather approaches.

All in all it is a great place with friendly people but perhaps if I can offer

a word for the wise. If you hope just to find brit friends and have a brit way

of life you might find your environment close in on you a bit but if you make

an effort to become part of the aussie culture I think you will be over whelmed

by the possibilities that will open up for you.

Cheers

Mike.
