Hello Melbourne

G'day

I have just moved to Melbourne and beginning the process of settling in and finding my feet. Have moved here on my own so feel quite brave. Phase 1 completed ie: getting my head around a new job and finding somewhere to live, now moving onto phase 2 - meeting new people and 'getting out there'.

Any suggestions or advice?

Claire

Hi Claire, hope your settling in okay. We are moving out around April/May so keep us posted on how easy you find it to make new friends etc cause that's been one of my main worries. We are both outgoings but I think making friends out there as soon as possible is essential to help ease you in. Have you found any newcomers groups out there yet?

HI Kathy and Niall

I haven't joined any newcomer groups yet but have been concentrating on the new job and flat hunting. I am quite lucky in that a few people at work are up for a few drinks on a Friday night which has helped but your right when you say that meeting new people and making new friends is a top priority. It will definitely be easier if you are working.

They are sport mad here so will be looking to join a rowing club once my broken collar bone has healed sufficiently. I am searching for a few clubs so if I come across anything interesting I will let you know.

In the meantime will let you know how things are going and when you get to Melbourne let me know and we can meet up.

Cheers

Claire

Hiya Claire,
My partner is going over with a job so he will be fine. I am going to be a lady of lesiure while we find a place to live and get everything else sorted but I will then be looking for permenant work. Thought about working maybe in a local coffee shop or retail to get to know people initially and help me feel settled.

Good idea about the sport route. I hope your shoulder gets better. Gonna look into that before we leave actually. Might try and find a local pool where I could do some teaching cause I have my qualification.

Will certainly let you know when we land but look forward to hearing about how you are getting on in the mean time. Just send me a pm.

Take care, Kathy

Were not in Melbourne yet - aim to be by end of the year though. Just wanted to say, I really admire you for doing it on your own....good on you. I find it hard enough with a hubby and 2 kids...mind you, they might be the reason it's hard work. Anyway, hope you settle in OK.

Hi Claire,
I live in melbourne, me and my husband moved here in December and love it.
We live now out in the western suburbs. My husband also came with a job and i came over with a bun in the oven!! haha so i am not working.
I think you do need that work place to meet new people which i am missing out on but i have met lots of people fro these web sites since being here as we are all in the same boat just wanting a little chat and to feel like we are not alone so far away.
If you are looking to find new friends look onto the britvics site. this is all people in or living in victoria and often have meet ups and events.
Where are you living at the moment?? When did you arrive??

If you need to know anything i will try my best to help and if you want to meet for a coffee i will happily meet up with you ( but it must be coffee as i am now 4 months pregnant and banned from alcohol!! )

Take care
Gail

HI Gail

I arrived 5 weeks ago so its all still very new but good new! I live in South Yarra which is a great location which helps.

Would be great to meet up for a coffee one weekend, completely understand the no alcohol clause, perhaps I could have your share instead!

Claire
