Socialising & Get TogethersIf you're looking to meet up with like minded people emigrating to Oz or want to arrange an event in Oz, please post details here.
OH has been after doing a breakfast barbie since we arrived - so we indulged him on boxing day and let hime do it - very nice too.
We like lamb cutlets on the barbie and eggplant brushed with a little olive oil. We haven't tried the fish in foil yet - but intend to try that soon. Pork Kebabs in a pineapple and chilli marinade are delicious - most butchers/supermarkets will sell chicken kebabs in loads of varieties so it's often not worth making your own. When you have a bbq or are invited to one - you take what you want to eat and something to share like a salad dips etc., They seem to like beetroot here and I've not been anywhere yet that I haven't seen a bowl of beetroot. OH still thinks he's being really tight if he asks people to bring food to our house.

Yes the Aussies seem to have beetroot with everything always on their burgers and pineapple, I'm quite partial to lamb on the barbie and chicken dusted with cajun-lovely, also i do roasted veggies on the bbq peppers onions mushrooms zucchini cherry toms sweetcorn and plenty of herbs, also fish cooked in foil it couldn't be better, well what do i cook for tea mmmmmmmm
For those of u that love Marmite/Vegemite - read on! If you dont , SORRY!!!
whatever meat you are eating, put it in a plastic sanwich bag with a spoonful of marmite or vegemite. (and a bit of olive oil)
squeeze a bit to get marmite rubbed into meat and leave in fridge to marinate for a day.
Cook on barbie and heres the important bit!
DO NOT OFFER IT TO FRIENDS!
I did that and nearly lost the lot!

Countdown to my birthday..20 days!
I'm a traditionalist, and I love Marmite, but to me it should be limited to toast only. Anything else, and I'm reminded of the daft old bat in the Vicar of Dibley...
My favourite on the barbie has got to be a rack of lamb - seared very quickly on the outside, and then put up in the rack at the top of the hood for 20 minutes. The result is a gorgeous bit of meat (though a bit of an indulgance as one rack for one person would be about 8 bucks), no other flavouring required.
We tend to cook on the barbie most nights, so much so that a few days ago, my son (when asked what he wanted for tea) said "can we have something without meat, PLEASE?".
Anyone had emu? Our gourmet butcher sells it and we're tempted - we like kangaroo (well alex won't eat it 'cos she thinks they're cute) - is it similar?

A Barbie breakfast!! hadnt thought of that but sounds good and looking forward to that already
Skippy meat tried this in Adelaide we had a beach BBQ and we had skippy in a roll yuk. I couldnt say what it taste like, thinking about it maybe it is like liver but with game sort of taste... I like Liver with gravy, onions and mash but I suppose I wouldnt even like Liver in a bun LOL So it could be because it didnt go with what else I was eating, ile definately give it another go when I get out there.
IN Brissy my cousin did his onions in melted butter and Beer, they were nice but then we had all had a few beers by then ourselves so anything was nice LOL
I did take the advise of someone on here and looked on the net a little, and noticed that you cook your prawns on the barbie but lay the prawns on baking paper and cook for about 4-5 mins!! Hadnt thought about the baking paper.
Thanks for the replies
Kimx p.s. Wendy havent heard from you in ages, hope your well. Yep I am looking forward to more Barbies as that means he cooks and I relax more!
I still dont think you can do better than a sausage on a barbie.
I cant wait to start trying to cook fish on ours will have to invest in a good recipe book unless you want to write your own with all the recipes you collect
