A lot of people have given very helpful advice on transporting a car to oz, but I was wondering if anyone had transported a boat?? If yes, is it a straight forward process or are there many complications??

We are 'hoping' to settle SOR in Perth ... so would it even be worth it? ie is a good choice of reasonibly priced boats to buy there?

Many thanks in advance

Really depends of the size - if its small it might fit in a container with your goods and chattels. Otherwise ....

You would face 5% import duty and 10% GST on the agreed value of the boat by Customs, the import duty and the cost of transport. The only thing that might present you with some issues is what the perceived value is and how long you have owned the boat - ie, if you have had it a long time it is perceived value not transactional cost. With regard to cost generally boats are more expensive over here - eg, I have a 2005 built 50ft Bavaria sailing yacht which I paid 100k in Europe yet here it is worth around 300k dollars - or 180k. You get a 3 year gap before you need to register it as Australian and pay the tax.

Thanks for your advice ... although $180k is very much out of our price range ... unfortunately,

We have today bought a Picton 170 speedboat and I am wondering

whether to transport it over or sell it when we 'eventually' get our visa.

What do you think? Worth bringing over in the container? or selling it this side and bringing the money and buying in Perth??

Any advice would be gratefully appreicated.

ps ..... our two young boys were jumping up and down in excitment when we told them we had bought it! Let the fun begin ......... :arghh:

I would keep it and put it in your container - well worth it for the tiny difference in the container fees. Considering you paid for it in GBP and the forex rate is so weak at 1.66 replacing it would mean you get less boat for your buck. Enjoy!!
