So, What's Tasmania like? What made you choose Tas?

Hi all

Just wanted to ask: What made you choose Tasmania to live and why. I appreciate that there will be different reasons but I'm interested to know. Is it a good place to live?

:notworthy:

Cheers Jasp

Welcome to PIO Jasp.

We were living in WA up north where my husband had been working for a good number of years and basically we wanted to come home, my husband is a Tasmanian.

We are living in the north of Tasmania 40 k outside of Launceston in apple & wine country on the river Tamar amidst stunning scenery/ beaches and coast line.

We are close by two good skiing resorts Cradle Mountain and Ben Lomond, 40 mins to Devonport for the ferries toi the mainland and on the door step of wonderful National Park Forests.

It is known as the cooler state, but the summers are gorgeous here, lovely friendly hospitable people, and the island is surrounded by wonderful scenery. I am always excited to come back home to this quaint island.

Like most places naturally it has its pros and cons but I havent met one person that hasnt fallen in love with Tasmania for its natural charm .

I sincerely hope you will find happiness here as I have done.

Very best wishes

Thanks Susie

I have a friend who used to work in Tas (her husband used to teach at the Uni there also). I worked with her in Adelaide. She speaks very highly of the state as well, and your having described it makes it sound the kind of place we are looking for.

Your positivity will spur me and the missus on!! God bless ya!!

Cheers

Hi Jasp

we live in Launceston, and its not for us. There are some beautiful parts of Tas,,,,lots of countryside and some great beaches and resorts,,,,,,,but its not all about that. It depends on what kind of life you are looking for. We have been here for 3 years, and Launceston is pretty dull and boring. Lots of trouble at night, in town, (not that we go out anymore), the people are ok, to your face, but beleive me they dont like outsiders,,,,,If you are thinking about Tas,,,,and the sort of lifestyle that is remote appeals, you can find it here.It just depends what you are looking for

We are going home, as soon as we can, Tas is not for us.

Jasp, I believe you are heading towards Hobart. You wont have any regrets I am sure.

My positivity is well justified Jasp... The people make you exceptionally welcome no matter where you come from, that is part of the charm of the island.... expensive? I dont think so, the produce is fresher, we have some wonderful home industries here, we are truly blessed and I know that Happy Lass who also has a Tasmanian husband and lives in Hobart will be along to greet you as well as Skani & Em&Paul.

I have found foreigners & interstaters being made especially welcome, after all it was Van Diemens land!... and I think living away from the mainland cities are a plus for me.

Just shout if I can help you at all......:wubclub:Susie

I am sorry you have found that Tasmania is not for you. Launceston is far from boring, but then we have an active life with many good friends and family here. I personally have been made so welcome by everyone here in Tasmania, I quite happily walk around Launceston in the evenings without being afraid.... which is a feat in itself after London. I wish you well in your travels back to the Uk Susie

Theres a heck of a lot of trouble in the northern towns at night now, you must of been very lucky not to see anything. You only need to read the newspaper to see, we have had, murder, arson, stabbings, etc, in the last few weeks. I know Hobart can be pretty rowdy, at night as well, but yeah I would agree with your post, advising Jasp to head for Hobart. It has a lot more going for it than Launie.

I suppose it depends on what you want from a place, as to how you see it. Obviously everyone has different views,,,,,,you either love it or hate it.

Its not good for us, but everyone is different, and Im really glad its great for you, and its all worked out

Christi, there are problems everywhere, even in Karratha which I always classed as safe. Perth. Adelaide/Melbourne/Brisbane all suffer from crime...The odd murder in Hobart or Launceston, stabbings etc. they unfortunately exist. Where I live Greens Beach, the most serious crime is probably poaching and I can leave my cars & home door unlocked. There is an unofficial people watch here which can be to your detriment should you wish to smuggle the odd illicit lover into the house. I for example wouldnt walk past Hawthorne Footie after a game late at night no more than my beloved Arsenal Stadium, but I have always found the Police here to be vigilant and helpful. Personally I wouldnt live in places like Invermay, but hey, you have tried Tasmania it wasnt for you which is fair enough as is Melbourne or Adelaide wouldnt be for me, and its time to move on..... Enjoy the rest of your days here and I sincerely hope you will find your "paradise" in your next venture.

Love Susie

Thank you sooooooooooooooooooooooo much Susie. Your kind words and positive outlook really mean a lot. Last time we wnet ot Adelaide we were all psyched up, and we came home totally deflated. Most people at work were nice but one or two were complete rotters and were well known for it. They tried to make our lives a misery. Sounds like you have a really friendly atmosphere over there and it is inspiring us to get on with our application.

Thank You once again to all of you:hug:

Oh, I am so sorry to hear that. You summed up how we felt in Adelaide except that we met some wonderful people, tho those were mainly patients who were in need of our care so we had not only a captive, but grateful audience. It is quite useful to get an alternative view which is just as valid.

Many Thanks

Thanks for your contribution Christi

It's all good and is helping us to focus. We have booked a 50th birthday jaunt for my wife and I to go to The states (NY, Washington DC and San Fran) but we've decided to cancel it and book to go to Tassie instead for a reccie. Thank you all.

We have been in Hobart just over a year. We initially looked at Adelaide but the climate put me off and the lack of water. Tassie just looked right re the climate, lack of big creepy crawlies, sufficient water oh and snow!!

I guess I wanted something close to UK but with Aussie way of life.

I do get home sick but for silly things like TV, supermarkets and competitive pricing!! not a lot of competiton here i.e. power supplies/phone etc but slowly getting there.

I like all th public holidays and the fact that there is hardly any traffic.

Just theis morning there were dolphins froliking int he Derwent and there was a Southern Right Whale a few weeks ago.

There are rough uns as there are anywhere.

The thing i don't like is the hooners, boys love their big engines and they are quite noisy. It seems to be an australian past time! The driving is a bit dodgy too out here!

Apart from that life is good.

You will like Hobart.

I like Launnie very green with lovely buildings but it was dead at night and the shope mostly closed at the weekend!

If it weren't for the fact that the ferry and my stomach do not like each other I'd be over in a flash, will have to go if the team is playing over there at some stage.

We've been in Tassie for almost 18 months, down south Hobart way and we do love it - although Paul would like it a bit warmer in the winter months! Having said that this winter has been nice and sunny most of the time with views of a snowy mountain - very pretty.

The summers are lovely and not so hot that you can't go out. The kids love it, walking to the beach on the way home from school.

As Deb said traffic doesn't exist - we were used to London traffic commutes.

The people are friendly and everybody does know everybody in Tassie.

Hobart does have a good selection of shops but I don't find it as commercialised as the UK so there is less choice.

Scenery is lovely and there are lots of great places to visit.

We love it here and although it isn't perfect (where is) we are happy with our choice.

Emma
