Advice on Visa Application

Hi, hoping for a bit of advice or guidance...

My husband has been offered a job with his current company with the Australian Branch. Its unclear at the moment which route they are offering visa wise. Its either an 186 or 457.

Does anyone know the time scales on these? Any upside or downsides to either? Just want to make sure we have all bases covered before we make a final decision.

Thank you

If you look through the migration section, you will see threads for processing times for different visas.

The two visas are massively different. A 457 is quicker normally, but it is only a temporary visa valid for between one day and four years with no automatic path to permanent. It is tied to the employer, so if he were to lose his job, he would only have 60 days to find another company willing and able to sponsor or leave the country. There are other issues such as partners of 457's can have difficulty finding work, children are in many states charged for education and there a number of other issues.

A 186 is a permanent visa.

Biggest thing to look at to start with is the fact a 457 is a temporary visa, a 186 is permanent.
