Where to stay when you first arrive? ........

HELP!!!!

Any help or recommendations on where people have stayed when they first arrive in Sydney, whilst they look for a rental property :-)

You could stay at a holiday rental from somewhere like http://www.stayz.com.au, or airbnb or something like that. We stayed in a hotel for two nights but had a 6 month rental in place through a relocation agent which OH's company paid for (it was expensive). I think most people do the holiday let thing.

Airbnb is your best bet. You will need at least 3-4 weeks to sort yourself more permanently. Tell us a bit about yourselves (single, couple, kids etc) and what sort of area you are looking for (distance to beach, city, quiet area/partyzone, jobs lined up/not etc), this will help people recommend a few areas for you to narrow in on.

couple coming out initially, 17 year old daughter is following 2 months after. Family friendly area near to water, not necessarily by the beach. I have a job to go to based in CBD area, so ideally on a train line.

Or a ferry route, this is a very popular commuting option. When checking out properties don't just consider proximity to trains. Manly is on the water and commutable by ferry as are Mosman, Cremorne, Balmain and Drummoyne, Abbotsford and Chiswick. Check out the map. Bronte and Coogee are lovely, commute will be by bus. Annnandale and Glebe also close to water and commute is by light rail or bus. Except for Manly all of these are within 10km of the CBD and IMO lovely places to start the adventure. Annandale, Balmain, and Glebe are inner west, think left wing leaning, environmentally conscious professionals. Very Islington and very urban with good restaurants. Bronte, Coogee, Mosman, probably more young families, a bit quieter and near beaches. Manly attracts backpackers and families alike. Fantastic beaches to the north. Longer to drive to the CBD but only 20 mins by ferry. Chiswick and Abbotsford much quieter, near to water but not beaches.

Thank you, this is VERY helpful, really appreciate it.

We have been looking at the Olympic Park area as all properties seem quite new and easy access to the city and reasonably priced. We will definitely take a look at these area's :-)

You could also look at Cronulla. It is on the train line, on the beach, there is the Georges River and the Port Hacking river on two of the other sides. Prices are also considerably lower than other areas of Sydney. I think it is about an hours commute to the CBD, but the trains are regular and efficient, and many people do it. It is about $6 each way, but you could also drive to a closer station such as Sutherland for even more frequent trains and a lower cost, plus free and convenient parking if you get there early enough!
