Dentists, moving to Oz with braces

Just a thought but how easy is it to get registered with a dentist in Oz? My 14 year old may be moving over with braces in her mouth

That might be a problem. Getting into an orthodontist is easy but you know that they might likely want to remove her existing braces and effectively begin work again - they don't want to be held liable for someone else's work. Ball park figure for braces these days is upwards of $6k all depending on the work that has to be done. If your current orthodontist happens to have contacts in Australia (wherever you are going) and is prepared to negotiate for you that they continue with his work then you might get away with a bit less. Getting into a dentist is easy too, it's all private so they don't care who they take as long as you can pay.

Very as they are all private. There are no equivalent of NHS dentists and insurance for dental is a good idea, however, you will need to speak to them to see if they will cover her treatment for a pre existing condition. Otherwise, likely to be a decent sized bill

Should have said - you said "may" be moving over with braces. May I suggest that if she hasn't had them fitted yet that you wait until you get to Australia then get them done from scratch there anyway.

I would advise anyone to get all of their dental issues fixed on the NHS before you go. It costs a fortune here. However the quality of treatment is far superior to the UK...and look after your teeth!

You don't need to "register" with dentists or doctors in Oz - you just make an appointment with any of your choice. The only limitation may be a very busy GP practice which closes its books to new patients.

So she may have braces but that only if she wants the work done. Basically her teeth are lovely and straight the problem is that the top teeth are not sitting centred in her mouth, they are all slightly to the right. We had an appointment with the orthodontist today, only waited 4 months for it for her to be told she would need 3 teeth removed and top plus bottom brace for at least 20 months with a retainer after that. TO say she wasn't impressed would be an understatement. she is 14 now and seems quite happy with her teeth and says she doesn't want to be wearing braces until she is 16. I don't really blame her to be honest.

Oh well, you won't have to wait for months for an orthodontist in Australia but as she doesn't have them on yet, either wait until she has had the whole treatment on the NHS or pay for it in Aus and start from scratch.
