[h=1]This is from the border.gov.com website, just wondered if anyone on here has any experience?

I am a permanent resident. What documents do I need to come back into Australia?[/h]If you are a permanent resident, and you want to travel outside Australia, you must make sure you can return.

Normally, as a permanent resident, your visa will let you leave and come back into Australia for up to five years from the date it was granted. After five years, if you want to leave and return to Australia as a permanent resident, you must hold a Five Year Resident Return visa.

You can apply for a Five Year Resident Return Visa online.

If you migrated to Australia before 1987 or travelled outside Australia between 1 March 1976 and 31 December 1986, your passport might have been stamped with an Authority to Return or a Return Endorsement.

If you hold an Authority to Return or Return Endorsement, you should not apply for a Resident Return visa. If you apply for a Resident Return visa and your application is approved, the new visa will cancel your Authority to Return or Return Endorsement.

If you do not hold a valid return visa you could be refused entry to Australia or have your entry delayed until your identity and claim to enter Australia are checked.

Does anyone have any experience of what you should do if you migrated well before 1987, no longer have the passport you arrived on but do have the passport number and a certified copy of the incoming passenger card from Canberra. I believe when my grandmother travelled back and forward in the 70's it was before the ATR's were introduced and well before the RRV

You will need to get another visa since the travel rights on your PR would have expired. How long have you been out of Australia. Unless you have spent at least 2 years of the last 5 years in Australia, you may struggle to get a RRV without demonstrating you have strong ties to Australia.

Thanks for this. I was just wondering what she would have been given on leaving before 1976? i cant find any details of how the recorded incoming and outgoing then

Sorry, didn't realise this was a question for your grandmother. Since the information you posted says she should NOT apply for a RRV, I'd suggest she speak with a migration agent who may be able to tell her what her situation is. Another option is calling DIBP directly but they have unfortunately been known to give incorrect information, which is why I think a migration agent may be a better resource.
