This will be interesting to see where the lie of the land is after the brexit vote .

Over 70% of the stoke public voted ukip ...but labour hold the seat with a 5,000 majority

There is very little to chose between labour ,conservative and ukip .

New ukip leader Paul nuttall is standing .

It should be a good barometer to see how Jeremy corbyn is fairing

I do hope UKIP stomp it and Corbyn resigns. Lose the battle - win the war.

Win what war ? .....the war for the working class supporting labour ? ...thats well and truly over .

" things can only get better " ...the Iraq war ...champagne socialism ....the nanny state ....." We know better than you,so fall into line "..

.the debt crisis .....have all put paid to that .

Most of my mates are what could be called working class ....from working class areas ....doing working jobs ,historical labour voters ,from labour areas ,and to them Jeremy corbyn and labour are a ****in joke .

Even the Lefiie want him gone asap

That is the end of Jeremy Corbyn, then. He will give a speech later today explaining how defeat means victory, and that holding a seat that has always been Labour means he is on the way to forming a government in three years’ time, but not even his supporters will believe him.

I think he will hold on, simply because the left don't have a viable alternative and the mainstream are Blairites who are even less electable and will never get the support of the left.

I think the party will split, but with neither being electable.

That's a grim outlook, one-party state for the foreseeable then!

Worst possible result for Labour, Stoke will give Corbyn the excuse to cling on and complete the destruction of the Labour Party.
agreed, although I think that without such a strong ukip contender, cons would have stomped it in.

I think that ukip and labour have proven that they are both irrelevant going forwards.

Don't think so ....pick who you like to lead labour ...for the foreseeable future ,they are a spent force ...they should have picked David milliband a few years ago ...downfall started there .
seriously? After all your vitriol about Blair you would choose another Blairite?

The electorate get the government they choose it doesn't matter how much vitriol there is. Blair was elected and another Blairite could be. Corbyn or another Corbynite (remember Kinnock or Foot?) has not and never will be elected. There was probably more vitriol towards Thatcher than any other British leader but it didn't stop her winning 3 times. The left need to stop fielding no hopers and compromise on somebody that can be elected (just as they did with Blair) if they want to have any influence at all.

I'm not defending Corbyn, he is an idealist, he is , I believe, a Leninist, he has never worked a proper job where you have to balance your boss, outputs and your personal ambitions and as a speaker he might as well have his head in a bucket, but he does have some ideas which might get support from the electorate if presented well but that is never going to happen.

Even if he was to go now the party is polarised into little soviets all sniping at each other, which maybe is Corbyns intention, keep everyone off balance, less chance of a coup against him, personally I do not see what Labour are going to fight the next election on, they have not really opposed anything the Tories have done or are doing so it is going to be difficult to stitch a campaign that has a ring of truth to it in 2020.

Maybe that is the Leninist coming out in him, break it all down to a cadre of like believers and then it will be a true party of the left facing a febrile right wing party bereft of ideas, which is of course a dangerous game because the right always have money and power.

Whatever it is he seems unwilling or unable to confront the Tories even when he has an open goal on Brexit, the NHS, the railways and aged care so pick or choose any of the above or maybe, as always, it's not conspiracy theory, it's just good old cock up, he's too bloody old, he isn't bright enough and he never learnt how to tie a tie and use a razor.
