Noey Posted January 11, 2017 Share Posted January 11, 2017 Hey folks were planning to move this june/July from nz to Brisbane. our son will be 15 and is keen on the move. He's originally British but grew up in nz since 7 years old. His view is that he's like to move to oz this year or wait until after uni and is keen to attend uni in oz. my wuestion really is around any experiences people have had making the move with a 15yr old lad? How easy did they find it? What challenges did they face? rosiew Posted January 11, 2017 Share Posted January 11, 2017 I have not done that move, but just making sure that you know about university/ further education fees as a permanent resident. You will only pay the local rate but you need to pay it upfront every year - only citizens are entitled to defer the cost. Pretty sure they get capped at 10k a year for nz citizens but I'd rather pay it anyway than lumber him with a lifetime of debt! interestingly, Aussies can access student loans in nz but not the other way round! Loopylu Posted January 12, 2017 Share Posted January 12, 2017 If he's a bit of an IT geek (like my twin 16 year old lads), his friends are probably all online and he will be able to keep in contact with them easily and still 'game'.... One thing we found moving our kids from the UK to here was that starting a new school midway through the acadmic year makes it harder for them to make new friends as new friendships are often formed at the start of the year when everyone gets moved into new classes/start new subjects. As Quoll says, so long as he is here for start of Year 11 when the final selection of subjects is made then he should be fine. There may be some issues around him getting his first choice of subjects as subject choices for Year 11 are made midway through Year 10 and can be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
