Family of 4 moving to Brisbane.

Hi, I'm just after some advice as we are looking to take the plunge and move to Brisbane.

Im a nurse currently training to be an advanced nurse practitioner in trauma.

My partner is currently a Registered manager of a children's care home,

and we have two children, one of which due to start high school and the other about to start school the same time, so we are wanting to get out prior to this so there aren't so many transitions.

where do people recommend living in the Brisbane area?

what schools would you recommend and how much are the fees?

are there any childcare services for working parents?

Childcare is a big worry for me as we aren't sure what type of shift patterns are available over there yet?

We will be coming over on 189 but not sure if there is any help towards childcare.

Brisbane is alot bigger than you think. I would try to work out where you will be working then look into areas. You would need to pin point being North, South or central before you can really pin down suburbs. Commuting across Brisbane can be a nightmare in rush hour.

What she said... Brisbane's area is 10 times that of Greater London.

Thanks, we are looking at the Ipswich area. Not set on anywhere yet and no ideas yet to where we will be based. Just trying to to get an idea of what will be ideal for us. I know the nursery school open quite early but not sure if they have before school/after school clubs etc.

The City of Ipswich is huge and includes areas such as Springfield through to true country boroughs out west. Ipswich is a pig to commute out of too especially if working in Brisbane.

Most will move near to their work as GC to Brisbane, Ipswich to Brisbane and SC to Brisbane are all very hard work during rush hours.

Why Ipswich? If it is just because housing is cheaper there please note that it is cheaper for a reason.

Some parts of Ipswich dont carry a great reputation and sme parts are classed as rough. (not that rough compared to some areas i saw in Manchester ,lol).. The more popular areas seem to be Springfield, Springfield Lakes,Brookwater, Sinnamon Park etc

With kids you would probably like Springfield Lakes with all the new ammenities. It also has a train station and is just off the highway so commuting isnt too bad.

It all depends where your going to be working I guess, personally as a family man with a lot of friends with kids I can vouch for such suburbs as enoggera, keppera, mitchelton all on the Ferny grove train line, I too hail from Manchester and they are in no way anything near as rough as it is there.

Lovely places to raise a family.

If you need to commute to Ipswich, live on the rail line between Ipswich and Brisbane as this gives best of both.

Recommend you don't get too fixated on areas until you arrive....

You are right to focus on childcare as this is likely to be a large expense for you. Ordinarily you get a 50% rebate on out of pocket expenses but these are for providers that are usually open weekdays during the day. I know people who've recently had a child and both parents are on shift work and they are considering a nanny, which means they are not eligible for the government rebate. Some employers have family friendly practices and will keep the graveyard shifts for those with no kids or older kids. Basically it all starts with work for you. Find where and when you will both likely be working and go from there. Will you have jobs or at least interviews arranged ahead of time do you think?

We we are in the process of looking at jobs. My job as a trauma nurse I'm finding is quite limiting as only a select few hospitals specialise in trauma however I can always find another nursing role.

my partner is a manager of a children's care home and we will hopefully be looking at both having jobs, definitely at least one of us to come out to.

We we aren't yet set on an area and have looked at a variety of suburbs, between Brisbane and the gold coast and are quite open to areas,

childcare and schooling is of high importance to us and would like to put the children in a good school.

So many factors to consider.
