Basic

When I was at high school in Perth, we were streamed into advanced, intermediate and basic. I always felt sorry for those in basic, as I thought that was a terrible label to place on kids. Couldn't they have thought of a more positive title? Developing or something?

People always put down political correctness. But 'basic'?

Have they improved things?

Probably not enough kids in Tassie to need to worry about it.

 There were far fewer kids in Tassie when I was streamed (back in the Dark Ages - remember, pc) than there are now. There are fads and fashions in education as in any sphere. I don't know whether streaming is "out" at the moment, or just not practised at her 2 schools, or even whether there is currently a difference between private and state education in these things.

In the UK we were streamed, our school had A, Alpha, B, Beta, C and R (for remedial).

Here in Perth, my children were streamed but the classes not actually called anything, except for the Academic extension programme (AEP) group.

We had foundation, general and credit classes...foundation being lowest...I think whatever it's called will eventually have negative connotations attached to it and need to be changed...kids at my school who were in foundation classes did worse than ever as they mostly weren't interested, were forgotten about as non acheivers and was full of misbehaving kids too so didn't really work in any helpful way...maybe for kids who are not academically gifted they could do extra practical or physical type courses and rename it something along those lines and it will appear that that group has chosen to focus on other things rather than being relegated to it!

Streaming not allowed in Victoria.

However, we have an excel class and another class with all the funded students (to allow full time use of an aide)

Maths in senior school has 4 levels, Foundation, General, Methods, Specialist , but the students are recommended for suitable levels due to ability.

That is what I mean by streaming. So when you say

do you mean something else?

Can we go back as far as the children having to use 25 cm (10") blackboards and crayons? There was a war on and paper was scarce.

Things got a lot better after you finished sorting out those annoying Boers though......for a little while at least

Not the Boers, that's Perthbum's ancestors. Mine was the Black Hole Of Calcutta...

Cheers, Bobj.

Sorry, long time to answer.

No streaming in junior school, taught as mixed ability classes.

Students choose level required in senior school based on prior effort, course counselling and perceived future pathways.
