Grass...

Well Australian grass isn't like a grass, it is not like any other type of grass that I have seen. If you look at it, it has creepers and isn't at all like English grass.

So what is it called?

Is the seed available in Bunnings?

I need to plant a lawn.

Get some runners from a neighbour. Easy to plant and grow, better than couch to mow, as well.

I would go with Sir Walter Buffalo grass.

I'm not a fan of Kikuyu at all.

We've had both types in the past. Our lawn here is totally different - same as British lawns - nice and soft and it even has some daisies in it.

There are many different grass types in Australia - suited to the different climate types within the country.

Too right. There is a house around the corner from us where the lawn looks like a bowling green pretty much year round. My OH suffers from serious lawn envy about the lawn. We have struggled to maintain a half decent lawn both here and in the UK.

I live on a small acreage lot, all lawn, and I tried for some years to get a decent lawn, with losing it each Summer. Then, 2 patches of Kikuyu appeared, and now they have spread to cover most of the acreage, and it is great. It does not burn away in the heat, does not need watering, and best of all, it is thick enough to choke any weeds that try to grow. It looks great. As mentioned, rather than seed, if you can get some runners to put down, it will grow and spread quite fast. At the expense of an extra set of mower blades each year, it is well worth having it down.

I have several friends that live in Bowral NSW; who have lawns exactly like this - in stripes.

Bowral is just over an hour south from Sydney.

The area is known as The Southern Highlands and is very picturesque.

Lots of little quaint English style villages.

Many of the houses have landscaped gardens exactly like your picture.

Temperature is very much like England too. We got snowed in last year in one of the villages.

So are weeds but a good grdener will manage them just as you can manage kikuyo. I have a kikuyo lawn and my fourby parks on it everyday with hardly a blemish.
