EA - Application as Mechanical or Industrial Enigneer

Hello All,

Hope everyone's having a good day. Its my first post on here and I must say the forum is pretty awesome.

My question is:

I need to do a CDR for Engineers Australia. The confusion I'm facing is that I have a bachelor's degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. However, my work experience (5+ years) seems to be a closer match to the ANZSCO specification for Industrial Engineer. I would like to apply as a Mechanical Engineer as it has more scope than an Industrial Engineer. Do I need to do a a Relevant Employment Assessment (I could secure enough points without it) or just a Standard CDR. And if I do a Standard CDR, should I only include tasks from my "educational program" in the career episodes or can I base my career episode(s) on my 5+ years of experience or should I mix both?

Hopefully someone understands :mask:

Thanks

Hi Taylorman,

Isn't your degree recognized ? Why are going via the CDR route if you have a Bachelor's Degree ? especially if you say you'll have enough points for the eoi. I do not understand the bit about Mechanical Engineer having more scope than industrial Engineer, as long as they are on the SOL and you are able to prove that you are either one or the other (by a skill assessment) , you should be able to submit your eoi, and it will be best to choose the easiest route.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

My degree isn't recognized. That, I'm sure of. Hence, the CDR route. I would have enough points under these circumstances:

Age - 30 points

IELTS - 20 points (if I get an 8 in all)

Qualifications - 15 (assuming positive qualification assessment - Mechanical engineer)

Overseas work experience - 0 (because I won't be doing a relevant employment experience assessment. However, if I decide to do it, then my current job profile fits industrial engineer more closely)

Therefore, total is already 65 and I can go via the 189 or 190 route.

With respect to the 190 visa, Mechanical Engineers have more scope since most states would sponsor a mechanical engineer but not an industrial engineer even though they are closely related occupations. So, I think it would be better to have an assessment as a mechanical engineer. It's a matter of having more options.

Hi,

This sheds more light , personally i think it would be in your advantage to do the employment assessment as well in case you do not make the 20 in IELTS, as of today the occupational ceiling is ,

2335

Industrial, Mechanical and Production Engineers

1788

1647

So the faster route and planning the better , in regards to the career episodes EA provides an msa booklet with a lot of useful info on the process, it states ;

" A career episode is a documented component of your engineering education and/or work experience which captures a particular period or distinct aspect of your engineering activity. It needs to clearly demonstrate the application of engineering knowledge and skills in the nominated occupation, not the acquisition of knowledge

• an engineering task undertaken as part of your educational program;

• a project you have worked on or are currently working on;

• a specific position that you occupied or currently occupy (in this case, the career episode must comprise more than a mere duty statement);

• a particular engineering problem that you were required to solve.

"

So as long as it application of knowledge and skills it fits the bill.

In regards to the visa subclass i believe the opposite , that 189 offers more options , as you are not limited to that particular state for any amount of time as oppose to the 190, which may become handy in searching for jobs after you get the visa , and getting the visa does not mean you have or will work in that particular field of which the visa was granted .

[]because I won't be doing a relevant employment experience assessment.

This is not a requirement to claim work experience points.

You can nominate only one skilled occupation for a particular skills assessment and for a visa Expression of Interest/application.

You seem to have received incorrect information about the prospects of state nomination for the skilled occupations you mentioned.

May I suggest that you consult a registered migration agent for advice about strategy?

Thanks JXJ.

Wrussell, I've looked at https://www.anzscosearch.com/ and there are more states that will sponsor a mechanical engineer. please see below.

My question is: Can I have my qualifications assessed as a mechanical engineer, apply for the visa as a mechanical engineer (more states!) and claim points for work experience as a mechanical engineer even though my job profile fits that on industrial engineer (i.e. a closely related profession). Actually, I am an integrity engineer in the oil and gas industry.

For example, WA has this on their website as a prerequisite for state nomination:

"Have at least one year's work experience within Australia or three years' work experience overseas within the last 10 years in your nominated or closely related occupation."

My current occupation would be considered as "closely related" to Mechanical Engineer.

Don't want to puncture your balloon at all - but jobs are pretty thin on the ground in Australia for anything involving manufacturing!

Was going to say the same. I know a lot of degree qualified mechanical / industrial engineers. Ones with good experience are finding new jobs when they lose theirs, but the newly qualified are struggling.

Thanks Diane and Bibbs for alerting me about the "situation on the ground". Much appreciated.

Just to clarify, we weren't arguing (I wasn't, at least). Was just trying to rationalize the information available online before I approach a Migration agent. However, I guess messages get lost in translation, especially on online forums.:wink:

Hi Taylorman,

I am in similar situation like your's where in my Bachelors Degree is in Mechanical Engineering while my Masters Degree is in Energy Management. All my work experience is in the field of Energy Efficiency, Energy Management sector and I am planning to submit my docs like Career Narrative etc to Engineers Australia as a Mechanical Engineer.

Can you please share your docs prepared for Engineers Australia Skills Assessment so that it can help me as well.

Thanks,

Prashant
