Kingston near Hobart

Hello,

Is there anyone from Kingston or who has knowledge about Kingston? I'm in talks with an employer based in Kingston who seems interested in hiring me. How big is the city? I know the population is about 20000 how big is it area wise in terms of sq. km? How can one travel from Hobart to Kingston and vice versa?

Where is the city's most prime location located? Also, at roughly what rate can I find an apartment of 1 bed room, living room and kitchen? Is real estate(renting) cheaper than Hobart or is at par?

How big is the city?

It's not a city...it's really a suburb of Hobart separated by about 10 kms of road.

I know the population is about 20000

The population was just under 10,000 at the 2011 census. It would have grown a bit since then, but definitely not to 20,000.

You can see how big it is on Google Earth. My guess is about 4 square miles. There is a road from Hobart - so you'd use either private car or a bus service.

It's not big enough to have a prime location, although overlooking the beach is probably a bit more expensive.

For rental rates look on

It would be cheaper than the most expensive parts of Hobart but not as cheap as the lowest priced suburbs.

" Kingston, together with Blackmans Bay, has a population of around 20,000." So maybe Kingston in itself has less than 15000! :)

The exact population for Kingston at the 2011 census was 9760 - figures from Australian Bureau of Statistics which conducts the census.

Blackmans Bay had 6728: if they added a few other towns surrounding they would eventually make 20,000.

Yeah thats likely, its just a suburb, nothing amazing. Within spitting distance of Hobart on a reasonable road. Got friends in Blackmans Bay who love it down there. If you want to live in Tassie, take it, but I thought you'd decided to go elsewhere?

Well we are landing in Sydney but our dream destination is tasmania. If we get an offer from there I'd be willing to go there. Else Sydney us a safer option from job point of view.

Hello,

We are planning to come to Hobart/Kingston around 11th Dec for about days. I'd really appreciate if some local is available for a chat over the phone for about 5-10 minutes. My discussion would pertain:

1) How to travel from Hobart Airport to Kingston(26 Channel Highway)? Cost is a worry for us so taxi is big no. Using public transport is our only option.

2) We are looking for a cheap hostel with no wifi network. I'm allergic to wifi. We are also open to Paying guests. If any one out here is willing to host us in Hobart for a few days, we are willing pay a reasonable charge. Not necessarily a room but even sleeping in the living room is fine. The reason we would choose staying with someone is because we have zero local knowledge and would be great to get some guidance. In the hostel, it could be just me and my wife and practically no one to ask questions to.

3) How to travel within the city cheaply and quickly? I'd like to visit a few offices(about 7-8) per day? When I mean city I mean both Kingston and Hobart.

4) Is there any meetup planned by Pomsinoz during that period by any chance?

Hi,

I work in kingston and live in mount nelson, it's a gorgeous area! i rent a one bedroom unit for $200 a week, the rental market is pretty competitive here though, was between 5 and 10 people at every viewing i went to and the agencys will want references, a credit check from your state and proof of income either from an employer, benefits or proof of funds in your account.

Kingston is an easy 10-15 minute drive from hobart straight up a dual lane highway. if theres anything else you need help with feel free to pick my brains :)

1) How to travel from Hobart Airport to Kingston(26 Channel Highway)? Cost is a worry for us so taxi is big no. Using public transport is our only option.

A shuttle bus meets every flight arriving. It parks directly outside the airport terminal and will take you directly into the Hobart CBD, stopping at hotels, backpackers hostels etc. Just let the driver know your destination and he will drop you off as closely as possible. I think the cost is about $12-14 per person for one way trip (may be cheaper if you buy a return ticket for your departure at the same time...not sure).

As for getting from Hobart city to Kingston, you will need a Metro bus. All its information for Hobart is here:

http://metrotas.com.au.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/MetroTas_Guide_HobartSouth_JUL12.pdf

The most direct buses are the ones which go via the Southern Outlet to Kingston. If you want a more roundabout way to see some more of Hobart and you have the time, you could choose one which travels via Sandy Bay and Taroona. It's a pretty drive along the harbour/river.

This website also has a map to show you where to catch buses - all bus stops are centred around the Elizabeth Street/Macquarie Street intersection in the CBD - near the Hobart GPO (with the big clock) and about one block away from the docks.

Both Hobart CBD and Kingston areas are good for walking.

No meetups planned by PomsinOz

These are the hostels I know of in Hobart:

I don't know whether they have wifi or not.

In the hostel, it could be just me and my wife and practically no one to ask questions to.

These hostels are for visitors, not residents, so they will have plenty of information for tourists and be used to answering visitors' questions all day every day.

There is also a Tourist Information Centre close to the Hobart CBD at 20 Davey Street (corner Davey and Elizabeth Streets and one (very small) block away from the bus stops mentioned above):

http://www.hobarttravelcentre.com.au/home

As Hobart is coming close to its peak tourist season, it may just be a case of finding any vacancy which will fit the days you want.
