What to do in Sydney

partnership

Recommended Posts

Will be in Sydney from the 15th June for 5 nights. Staying in Breakfree on George.

On list at present

Palm Beach to see home and away set - probably on the Wed

Opera house, harbour, bridge

Waverley Cemetery (long story)

Bondi

Any recommendations as to what we should do, places to eat, any events on. Also best way of getting about - if we buy a weekly bus ticket what one to get that will cover palm beach.

Thanks

I had to Google 'Sydney weekly travel passes' first. I think you can get the bus to Palm Beach - L90? - from near your hotel, south on George Street near Broadway. I'm sure I've seen buses leaving for Palm Beach there, and there may be a stop closer to your hotel. You could also, with the help of your travel pass, come back to the city via Manly and the ferry, again, I think the 155 bus goes from somewhere on your route from Palm Beach along Barranjoey/Pittwater Roads.

Waverley cemetery is an interesting place to visit, with some graves of well-known Australians, eg, (let me Google again, though I was very sure of my facts) the poet Henry Kendall. You could combine your trip to Waverley cemetery with a walk along the coast path from Bondi, which now goes, I think right through to Maroubra beach, although there could be some parts which divert to nearby streets.

Come up to The Strawberry Hills hotel on Wednesday 17th June and help me with the pub quiz! I just Googled your hotel and see it is at the southern end of the city, so you could walk there easily, south on George St, left on Eddy Ave, along the front of Central Station with its clock tower, then right on Elizabeth Street.

Any of the inner city suburbs are interesting to walk around, and the best way to see the sights too. I like the Museum of Sydney, the Police and Justice museum (both close to each other near Circular Quay, and, finally, after over 30 years here, I went to Hyde Park Barracks museum in Macquarie St near Hyde Park.

You could do what I like to do wherever I am, and just get on a bus or train at random and see where it goes. Sydney has open top bus tours around the sights, just like in London, although I think it's more interesting, and 'real' to hop on buses, trains, and ferries, oh, and trams! I forgot the Light Rail from Central on Eddy Ave, again near your hotel.

When we had one of those multi passes it covered trains all the way out to the Blue Mountains - we were fitting in our activities around a guitar summer school our son was on so went at about 10am, and came back at around 2pm but you could make a long day of it and fit in a walk when you get there and some lunch easily - it was about a two hour train trip if I remember correctly. Should think it would be pretty spectacular at this time of year as well with the autumn colours. Get an app on your smartphone - we used TripGo I think - so you can coordinate connection times.

Some more suggestions: a gentle kayak in the harbour, you can hire kayaks from the spit bridge or rose bay, lunch with a view at the Tower buffet or just the view at the Tower Eye (you can see me flat from here!), Saturday morning markets in whichever suburb you fancy ( http://www.localmarketguide.com.au ), ferry to manly and a snorkle at Shelly Beach - water's a bit nippy though, there's bare foot lawn bowls with amazing views next to Waverley Cemetry which is good fun if there's a few of you as you can take a few bears onto the green ( you may need to book, http://clovellybowlingclub.com.au ). Some more things will probably occur to me....

How come you know all these things and I don't!

I'm down at Clovelly, 10 past 8, dark now but so nice I don't want to go home. I had swim just after 7.

A stroll through the Botanic gardens from the Opera House to Woolloomooloo is nice. When we were there on holiday a few years ago it was my sons favourite part of the trip (that and Bondi where the surf was pretty big). He has autism and the number of people around was a bit daunting to him. We stayed at the holiday Inn in Darling Harbour and it's always busy round there. The City and public transport is a lot busier than Perth and we noticed he was a bit quite and withdrawn. When we were in the Botanic Gardens he was still quite and we asked if he was OK and he said how peaceful and nice it was in there after the bustle of the City.
