Taking the car to Australia? Are we mad?

We have a Toyota Landcruiser, whose value has plummeted recently in the light of the recent 'environmental' media coverage. We'd rather not sell it before we go (hopefully this September) and therefore avoid making a huge loss! The problem is that this would mean shipping the car to Australia. We've had a couple of quotes (around £1400) but these do not include the costs incurred at the other end in order to get it ready for the Australian roads.

Does anybody have any information or experience they might be willing to share? What would customs etc. charge to admit the vehicle? Its UK value is between £10 and £11k.

Are we damned if we do and damned if we don't?

Thanks

Andy

G'day

It's probably much cheaper to sell it at a loss and buy another one here. Do you know how much it would cost to buy a similar Landcruiser here? what is the age and model of your car?

Cheers

Try http://www.drive.com.au for an idea of Oz prices....personally....like above...sell it and look again in Oz e.g. sometimes in Oz, I know Toyota especially, they include special dust proofing and the suspension has been modified to cope with the bush. Imported models may have maintenance and other problems if you use out of city....

In order to import a vehicle, ou have to have it steam cleaned - inside, outside and engine - the tyres also have to be free of any traces of earth. Then there's the import duty, the rego, the road-worthy certificate and the modifications mentioned in the post before this one.

Personally, I would try and get a private sale and not start your new life with a big headache!
