Hi all! Myself and my hubby are currently discussing the possibility of making the move to Oz. It has always been a dream of mine but hubby has never been keen up untill the last few wks when he has been open to the idea.

Been researching bits online and yesterday filled in some online assessments of various companys. Today I have been contacted by 'Global Visas' and was told that due to our occupations (i'm a nurse and hubby is a carpenter) the chances of us getting a visa look very good. Then came the hard sell about immigration changes happening in July. Told that it will become a lottery system to even apply for a visa so chances will drop drastically. For best chance before july he said that we need to start the process and pay £600 deposit in the next few wks, ideally this week!!! My husband is still undecided and he feels like we're being rushed into making a decision. The agent is calling back tomorrow!!

My main question is the changes coming in July. Is it going to be that much harder to get a visa ? Although this is a move I would love to make my husband needs more time to think about it and look into the chances of him getting work. Also need to consider our 2 young children. Lots and lots to think about :)

Hiya,

Firstly, congratulations on having occupations in demand. I think you and hubby need to talk this one out a little more - you'll both need to be emotionally (never mind financially) invested in this process to continue.

An agent will try to hurry you - he wants money. For what it's worth though, I paid 1200 for my first installment in August, but then I am an off-list occupant. Editors aren't in high demand in Australia! ;) So I needed the specialist advice. You may not need to use an agent at all -IF you do your homework and find out what you need to do yourselves. DIAC have their own website filled with info, and there's plenty of people here who will give you well-meaning advice. If you do decide to go it alone though, prepare to spend your time researching and form-filling like crazy.

Finally, on the July 2012 changes. They are going to happen. And while DIAC could do almost anything, it seems fairly certain that the system will involve 'invitation only' applications. Only the highest-scoring applicants will be invited to apply for visas. You may, of course, be one of those, but the great disadvantage to this new format is the uncertainty. Those who express their interest to the department may wait a very long time to be invited to apply.

I would say if you weigh up your options and you'd like your visa sooner rather than later, then go for it!

Good luck with whatever you decide,

Dx

hi

i think with your and hubbys jobs you should not have too much getting a visa, dont let a visa company rush you into handing over money, my hubby is a stone mason and is on skills shortage list we knew we wnated to goto tasmania so we went the route of being state sponsored thats subclass 176visa. i think a sub class 175 would be a good choice as it gives you a little more freedom. Once you have got your head around it all its really easy to do on your own you just have to get into that organised frame of mind (which was hard for me im such a leave everything to last min person) but you do it.

the money saved on not using the agent is over half of what our shipping cost.

good luck with it all
