Type 1 Diabetes

I have Type 1 Diabetes for past 10 years and I am scared of my medicals. Please advise.

No need to be scared, a lot of members have taken the medicals with Diabetics, If you can get a letter from your doctor to state that you control it and no problems are expected you will be fine. They do not expect everyone to be 100% fit. ( I have a heart condition and got my visa). They are looking at the long term cost to the country, and a controlled diabetic should have no problems.

I've had type 1 Diabetes for over 20 years and didn't have any problem with my medicals. I did have to pay for extra blood tests which were sent with the medical report and it did have to be referred (which means the actual medical officer [i.e. a doctor] in Oz checks it rather than it just being approved by a clerk accepting the result of the doctor who did the medical) but that only took about 2 weeks.

Hi I have been a type 1 diabetic for 25 years. I got granted a 457 visa 4 years ago and had no problem with the medical. I have now applied for a 175 visa and had my medicals on 3rd Jan this year. I suggest you ask your doctor for your latest blood test results (Hb1AC) and take them with you along with the results of your latest eye clinic appointment. If you are well controlled then there shouldn't be a problem.

On my 457 visa I took as much insulin as possible as hand luggage and I wasn't sure how much it would cost me in Australia. I enrolled with a doctor and he wrote prescriptions for me. It ended up costing me about $40 dollars for about 6 weeks worth of insulin. So not as good as free in the UK but not too bad. I'm not sure if you still have to pay when a permanent resident or whether you get them for free?

I am 33 yrs old and I have applied for 176 under state sponsorship...I am about to get my CO. Want to know if H1abc is bad..does that matter?

Also do they test H1abc as it does not mention on the website.

It's not a standard blood test for the medical, but the doctor doing mine did it (and what I was told was even more important another blood test which checks kidney function - I don't remember the name) because he said if it wasn't sent with the medical report that the Medical Officer would be bound to ask for it and it would be more time and expense later. The Medical Officer approved it with the blood tests results - but of course I've no way of knowing if he'd have asked for the blood tests if they hadn't been included.

Do they get uploaded to hoc Sydney then sent to your co?

I have no idea. I was just wondering that if you dont declare being Diabetic. How do they get to know?

I think the blood and urine tests would give it away:eek:.

Do not consider hiding any illness, if you do and it comes to light that you lied or deceived DIAC, as it would when you wanted treatment then your visa would be void. and a ban on reapplying for at lest 3 years could be given.

It took about 2 weeks between my medical being referred and it being finalised. Everything was reported on-line so I don't know how the actual communication between the Chief Medical Officer and the CO works.

Actually I meant two weeks from when the medicals were shown as having been received to when they were shown as finalised. That said I think the medicals are now filed electronically almost as soon as they are done so that shouldn't add much extra time (in my day they were sent by post/courier).

Hi Thanks for all the info...I declared my self as Type 1 Diabetic and they checked my eyes and Creatinine Serum and I was referred and got approved.

Thanks for letting us know the outcome, it will be of great interest to other Diabetics, especially type 1

I am Type II diabetic but was insulin controlled - I had the usual bloods and urine tests, however I had to have a letter from my GP (if you have a specialist even better!) confirming my diabetes, medication and last couple of blood level testing that had taken place. Maybe worth getting your GP to do cholestrol testing and anything else that can be linked to diabetes so you can have a record of these at hand also.

My random blood sugars were 8.4 at the time (a little high!) and I was passed !!!

Don't worry - if your sugars are controlled you will be fine.

Hello, I know this is a bit old thread and most probably you are there already.

I am type 1 diabetic too planning to go in a permanent visa . I would like to know, what was the subclass of your visa. Was it temporary working, or permanent 189 or 190?
