An Australian campervan operator has been rapped for offering a discount on rentals for tourists who smoke cannabis.

Wicked Campers - which also offers vans for hire in Europe and the UK - is promoting a special deal on its Australian site which asks visitors whether they 'Smoke Pot?' and if so, offers them an extra day free. The advert is accompanied by a picture of a man looking spaced out.

The website says: 'Smoke Weed? Love it? Well we love you so we’re gonna give you an EXTRA DAY FREE!

'Don’t drive drunk, smoke pot and fly!!! Your friends will be GREEN with envy when they see the awesome pics of you in your Wicked Camper!'

It adds: 'So get on down to your local Wicked Depot and tell them Cheech and Chong sent you and we’ll give you an EXTRA DAY FREE!'

The terms of rental also state that the offer is only 'valid only for committed stoners' and that people should 'mention it to our roadtrip planners when booking'.

It is also 'not valid' for 'politicians, journalists, judges, or lawyers'. Australian traffic police have criticised the advert as 'highly negligent'.

Supt Neville Taylor, Victoria's top traffic officer, told the Herald Sun that the promotion was 'disgraceful'. He said: 'I am outraged that a company is encouraging people to take illicit drugs and drive. 'Cannabis can have a significant impact on drivers' reaction times, it can distort perceptions of speed and distance and also impact on concentration and coordination when driving.' 'This advertising is highly negligent and encourages illegal and dangerous behaviour.'

It was reported that Wicked Campers owner John Webb said the advert was not supposed to encourage driving while under the influence of cannabis and that there was also a discount deal for people who are gay. He said: 'I don't take things too seriously.'

Some friends from the Uk hired one of their vans and were extermely embarrassed by the crude "grafitti" sprayed on the side of it and had to get stickers to cover it up (very lewd text and pornographic images), particulaly as they were visiting small towns in the outback. They are no prudes but this company has a reputation for poorly maintained vehicles and their vans are in very bad taste.
