2/10/2011 11:07:35 AM - Burua (south of Gladstone)

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) is advising residents on Little Creek Boulevard, Spence Court, Brifney St, Woodlands Court and Morkowitz Place, who are located in Little Creek Estate and residents in Telina Estate, Parksville Estate, Toondoon Botanical Gardens and Mt Biondello at Burua to start enacting their bushfire plans and prepare for a bushfire in their area.

At 11.00 am a large bushfire was located at the southern side of Gladstone. The fast moving fire is travelling in a south eastern, north eastern and northern direction and is expected to impact the areas of Little Creek Estate, Telina Estate, Parksville Estate, Toodoon Botanical Gardens and Mt Biondello in the next two to six hours.

This fire is moving quickly and firefighters are experiencing difficulty in controlling it. Spot fires may occur ahead of the fire front and embers are also being thrown from the fire.

Residents are strongly advised to be prepared to relocate to a safer area if required. Leaving is the safest option for survival in a bushfire.

Well prepared and defended homes can offer safety during the fire and may be defendable.

Currently, eleven fire crews and an aerial bomber are working to contain the blaze but firefighters may not be able to protect every affected property and residents should not expect a firefighter at their door.

Residents are advised to call Triple Zero (000) if their property comes under threat.

Residents should consider taking precautionary measures including:

• Put on protective clothing

• Drink lots of water

• Move car/s to a safe location

• Close windows and doors and shut blinds

• Bring pets inside and restrain them (leash, cage or secure room) and provide water

• Wet down fine fuels close to buildings

• Remove garden furniture, doormats and other items

• Seal all gaps under doors and screens

• Fill containers with water - eg bath, sinks, buckets, wheelie bins, etc

• Have ladders ready for roof space access (inside) and against roof (outside)

• Have generator or petrol pump ready

• Check and patrol outside for embers and extinguish any spot fires and seek shelter as the fire front arrives.

Regular updated information will be provided on the QFRS Rural Operations website at http://www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au or at http://www.fire.qld.gov.au or by listening to their local radio station.

Background:

There are three levels of bushfire warning

Emergency Warning: You are in danger and need to take immediate action recommended by the fire service.

Watch and Act: There is a heightened level of threat, you need to be aware of your situation and take action to be prepared and protect yourself and your family.

Advice: A fire or other emergency has started in the area however there is no immediate threat.

Bushfire Activity and Advice - North Coast Region

2/10/2011 10:18:35 AM

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) is advising residents across the South Burnett and Burrum Heads areas to remain vigilant with heightened fire activity currently being experienced across the region.

Firefighters are currently attending to in-excess of thirty fires across the region with more anticipated throughout the day.

Residents are reminded a Fire Danger Period is currently in place which means people are not permitted to light a fire, regardless of size without a permit unless for the purpose of cooking or warmth.

People who have a permit and are considering lighting a fire today are urged to make contact with their local fire wardens before going ahead.

Motorists are reminded of the dangers of flicking cigarette butts outside car windows and people are urged to take extra care when using power tools and machinery. Even a small fire has the potential to spread quickly in these conditions and could put lives and homes at risk.

There is a large amount of smoke in and around these areas and people who are suffering from or are susceptible to respiratory illness should remain inside and keep their windows and doors shut.

If people are concerned their home is under threat they should call triple zero (000) immediately.

Fire Activity Report for Wednesday, 12 October 2011 as at 7am

12/10/2011

Multiple Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) crews and State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers responded to approximately 70 activations due to storm related activity overnight in the Parkinson, Hillcrest, Daisy Hill, Springfield and Logan areas.

Requests for assistance were for leaking roofs, roof damage and and fallen trees.

The SES attended reports of houses inundated with water at Maurice Avenue, Morayfield, Riseborough Terrace, Cleveland and Andrew Street, Kuraby yesterday afternoon and overnight. All persons were removed from these properties safety and swift water rescue was not required.

In addition, the SES attended four part roof collapses at Mapleton Crescent, Wallum Drive, Barrine Place and Talisker Place, Parkinson. No injuries were reported.

With storm activity predicted for South East Queensland today and for Saturday, the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) is urging the community to avoid entering flooded waters by car or on foot.

Staying out of flood waters is crucial. People often underestimate the danger, thinking they can make it through. Sadly, this is not a reality.

Flood waters can be lethal and their currents can be deceptive. What appears to be a shallow, placid body of water can turn into a raging floodway in seconds. When this happens, vehicles are easily swept away. There are also hidden dangers, including fast moving debris which may not be visible and can cause entrapment, serious injury and death.

If you’re attempting to cross a flooded roadway on foot you’ve got no chance. Even strong swimmers will not survive in fast moving flood waters.

While QFRS is well resourced and highly skilled in this rescue technique, QFRS urges the public not to put their own lives – or the lives of rescuers – at risk. Most rescues are avoidable if people heed warning signs and apply common sense.

Emergency Management Queensland also advises the following:

• Move your car under cover or away from trees.

• Secure loose outdoor items.

• Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.

• Listen to your radio for severe storm updates;

• Stay inside and shelter well clear of windows, doors and skylights;

• If outdoors, seek solid enclosed shelter;

• If driving, stop clear of trees, power lines and streams

• Don’t use a fixed telephone during a severe storm due to lightning danger.

• Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

If people need emergency assistance they are urged to call Triple Zero (000) immediately or for SES assistance with storm damage call 132 500.
