Before you fly

Travel tips before you fly:

Do not carry liquids in excess of 100 ml.

  • Each container should not exceed 100 ml
  • Use a clear, resealable plastic bag
  • Place resealable bag in hand luggage
  • Maximum 1 litre capacity

Pack personal belongings in your hand luggage.

Place laptops in an easily retrievable location as you will be asked to place in trays provided at the security checkpoint.

Check with your airline about baggage allowances.

Generally 2 pieces of baggage are allowed for international travel with the weight of each piece not exceeding 32 kilograms, however this may vary by airline and by fare type.

Excess baggage must be repacked and excess baggage fees typically apply.

Always remove old baggage tags as they may cause the baggage system to reject the luggage it is attached to.

Avoid using cardboard boxes as they must be processed manually (which takes more

time) and are not durable. Arrange for travel insurance.

Things to do in Dubai

Bus Tour of Dubai

The Big Bus Tour is pretty good in Dubai, taking you around all the tourist sites and starts at Wafi City Mall. The "Big Bus Tour" gives a great overview of everything in Dubai over a couple of hours. You can book your tickets even before you get to Dubai, and hop on and off the bus at the various points. The ticket now includes a separate tour which drives you to see the various hotels and the construction that is going on. The guides are very knowledgeable, and with your ticket valid for 24 hours, this could cover all tourist stuff in one go. For those into something a little different, the Wonderbus Tour drives across land, before going into the water, giving a whole different view of Dubai. Even more rock star, if you have the cash, would be to take a helicoptor tour.

Take an abra across Dubai Creek

Avoid the traffic and cross the creek using an abra, one of the small wooden boats. It costs next to nothing (1 Dirham) and can be included as part of your adventures through the city. You get a real feel for Dubai by crossing the creek. It lasts only a few minutes and you can incorporate it as part of your day.

Bastakia Quarter

The Bastakia Quarter in Bur Dubai is one of the city’s most picturesque heritage sites. It was built in the late 19th century by Persian merchants attracted to the city by its relaxed trade tariffs and takes it name from the town of Bastak in southern Iran.

The lovely Bastakia Quarter, or Bur Bastakia, is Dubai’s historic heart. Here, in the narrow whitewashed lanes overlooked by lofty windtowers of traditional courtyard houses, the glitz and glamor of Sheikh Zayed Road and the Mall of the Emirates feel centuries away.

This is a place for wandering and soaking up the atmosphere, catching glimpses through shuttered gateways into the tranquil courtyards of traditional homes, hearing the sound of trickling fountains, and seeing sprays of purple bougainvillea add a dash of color to the passageways’ high whitewashed walls.

Several of the gorgeous courtyard buildings host art galleries showcasing the work of local artists, and their garden cafes provide a relaxing oasis. A colorful souq market is held here on Saturdays, featuring books, arts and crafts, and fashion.

The area has been declared a conservation area and its narrow alleys pedestrianised. Many of the restored buildings here feature wind towers, an early but effective form of air-conditioning. Some are private homes, but many are open to the public. These include:

  • Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding
  • Basta Art Café - Popular courtyard café.
  • Majlis Gallery - Features the work of local and international artists.
  • Ostra - Gallery specialising in contemporary art and sculpture.
  • XVA - Small guesthouse and art gallery.

This Mall of the Emirates opened in October 2005 and is the largest shopping mall outside North America. It is situated on Sheikh Zayed Road, very near the beach. What more can you ask for, every possible shop ranging from the traditional Arabic area through to a Ski Slope! - Yes an indoor ski slope is situated next to Virgin Records, here you can show off your skills on the slopes, play in the snow and even have lessons. Imagine telling your friends you learnt to ski in the desert. It is advisable to bring your own ski gloves as these are the only item not supplied by the ski centre. Prices are very affordable, the equivalent of approximately £20 for a 2 hour session. A day pass can be purchased for approximately £34. This is no ordinary ski slope , it has fully operational ski lifts along with 5 different runs, the longest being over 400m. The highest point for experienced skiers is more than 60m! The Textile Market— where you'll find magnificent bolts of fabric, along with less inspiring tat — and on to the Creek where you can either join the commuters for a AED 1 ($.30) abra (water taxi) ride across the water or hire your own boat for a scenic tour of the waterway. Back in port, head to the small but interesting Dubai Museum to see how oil and ambition mixed to make this modern oasis. If you get hungry again, check out Bastakiah Nights, an atmospheric Lebanese restaurant with a great rooftop area.

Golf

Emirates Golf Club, host of the European Tour sanctioned Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, was the first all grass championship golf course in the Middle East when it opened in 1988. Taking pride in its 36 holes of world-class golf, the club sports two of the city's finest must-play courses, the Majlis and the Faldo Course, which is also the only 18 hole course in the region to offer night golf. Both courses combine the natural rolling desert terrain for a serious golfing test, while the signature clubhouse, remains the most eye-catching in the region. The Majlis Course has been presented with numerous accolades over its 22 year history, the most recent of which were its 2010 ranking by Golf World magazine as one of the 'Top 100 Golf Courses in the World' and its award for 'Best Course Middle East' in the Asian Golf Monthly Awards 2010 .

The Best Of Dubai On A Budget - Your Hotel

In Dubai, you may automatically assume that every hotel costs a month's salary for a night's stay. That's untrue. Many affordable Dubai hotels offer the utmost in luxury and hospitality. Some fine hotels you may want to look into are:

* The Gulf Pearl Hotel - Rates are around $71 per night. You’re only minutes away from the airport and within walking distance of many of Dubai's shopping and cultural wonders.

* The New Peninsula Hotel - Rates around $99 per night. Enjoy comfortable rooms and only you’re only 10 minutes away from the beaches of Dubai. This one is also located in the heart of the shopping district.

* The Pacific Hotel - A double room costs $80 per night. Your room features a balcony that overlooks the stunning city and offers an idealistic setting for an after dinner cup of coffee. Located in Diera's main electronics and textile market, you're only minutes away from the Twin Towers Mall, the Dubai Creek, the Gold Souk and the Dubai Museum.

The Best Of Dubai On A Budget - Dining

You can eat like a sultan in the city of Dubai for less than you would have imagined. The local delicacy, Shwarma (delicious seasoned meat and vegetables on a pita with dressing), is available for only about 80 cents. The deluxe version climbs up to $1.30 for a tasty treat. Many American fast food chains have staked a claim in the Dubai food industry, but you can get delicious regional cuisine for about the same money. Here are some budget conscious restaurants in Dubai.

* Karachi Darbar – Scattered throughout the city, this is a chain of Eastern restaurants serves delicious food for minimal money.

* Jabal Al Noor - Another Eastern chain restaurant serving regional fast food. It's different, delicious and dirt-cheap!

* Toscana - Moderately priced Italian food that's as authentically Italian as Tuscany. Perfect for when you want something different.

* Wafi Gourmet - Impressive Lebanese cuisine and ambiance to match.

trans.giftrans.gif Dubai Maps and Orientation

(Dubai, United Arab Emirates, UAE)

dubai_burj_aerial_view.jpgPerhaps the best known city in the United Arab Emirates and certainly the most popular, Dubai is actually one of the country's seven different emirates which combine to make the UAE. Dubai currently ranks as the most modern of all the emirates and is continually expanding and developing, with the relatively recent addition of its famous Palm Islands being the biggest land reclamation project in existence.

The city of Dubai offers an extensive infrastructure and has been transformed into a desert oasis, filled with towering skyscrapers and exceptional luxury hotels. There are endless different districts and suburbs, although only a few of these are actually in common usage and not always clearly shown on maps of the city.

Dubai Maps: Orientation of the City - Dubai, United Arab Emirates, UAE

There really are four main areas of interest to tourists visiting Dubai. Deira is an important neighbourhood and encompasses the Al-Garhoud area close to the airport. Across the Creek from Deira is Bur Dubai, which can be reached using either water taxis (abras), the Al-Maktoum Bridge or the Al-Shindaga Tunnel.

Bur Dubai lies on the southerly side of the Creek and is filled with hotels, restaurants, museums and interesting areas, such as the characterful Bastakiya (Bastakia) district and the residential suburb of Karama. Directly south-west of Bur Dubai is the Sheikh Zayed Road, which heads inland and runs parallel to the shoreline, with this area being filled with places to stay and eat. Finally, the fourth neighbourhood of note is Jumeirah, with Jumeirah Road forming an important thoroughfare and running next to the beachfront. The Dubai Marine Beach Resort is included within the Jumeirah area.

  • Abu Dhabi - south-west
  • Ajman - north-east
  • Al Ain - south-east
  • Al Haba - east
  • Al Samha - south
  • Dhaid - east
  • Dibba (Oman) - north-east
  • Fujairah - east
  • Kish Island (Iran) - north
  • Masfut - east
  • Mina Jebel Ali - south-west
  • Ra's al Khaimah - north-east
  • Sha'am - north-east
  • Sharjah - north-east
  • Sweihan - south-east
  • Umm al Quwain - north-east

Drug restrictions in the UAE

Essentially drugs that may be over the counter in your home country could be banned in the UAE. This could include many common cold and cough remedies.Various sleeping tablets, painkillers, anti-depressants and hormone replacement therapy drugs are banned in the UAE, as well as sex stimulants such as Viagra for example.

If you are going to bring in your drugs, then at the very least, make sure that you have a copy of your prescription and note from your doctor on the reason you need to take such medication.

Here is the full list: (If you are searching for a specific drug, it might be worth trying the search function above or a cntrlF) CD(A) - Psychotropics

(These are drugs for which a prescription must be held. The more detailed the medical report from the authorising doctor which can accompany any drug in this category, the better. In the UAE, they can only be dispensed upon production of a registered health authority-approved prescription. They include some common sleeping tablets, painkillers, anti-depressants and hormone replacement therapy/HRT)

Please do scroll down on this link for banned medications without a doctor's letter/prescrciption.

Travelling with Infants

At every stage in the journey, Emirates offers special assistance to make travelling more comfortable and convenient for our youngest flyers and their families.

Any person under two years is an infant. For more information, see our Special Needs FAQs page.

Whether you require a bassinet*, children's meals, or any other special service, just let us know and we will make the necessary arrangements. For the comfort of families with young children and to ensure that your flight takes off smoothly, Emirates offers priority boarding to families with young children. We also offer complimentary baby stroller service at Dubai International Airport (on arrival and transit only) for all of our passengers.Twin baby strollers are also available.

For families travelling with infants, we have equipped every Emirates plane with:

Pillows and blankets

Large overhead storage lockers

Changing tables in the toilets

We also have bassinets on board all of our aircraft, measuring approximately 29.5 inches (74.93 cm) long by 13 inches (33.02 cm) wide by 6.5 inches (16.51 cm) deep. There is a weight limit of 11 kgs. In the First Class suites a custom bassinet is fitted that measures 25 inches (63.5 cm) long and 11 inches (28 cm) wide.

Infant Safety

For the safety of our youngest passengers, certain rules apply to infants travelling with Emirates.

An infant held in the lap of an adult passenger throughout the flight should be restrained where possible, but adult seat belts must not be fastened around both adult and infant. Seat belt extensions carried on board all Emirates aircraft should be used instead.

Child restraint devices (CRDs) approved for use in aircraft only by any Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA), the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or Transport Canada may be used, if marked accordingly.

Parents or guardians may use infant car seats at any stage of the flight. Airport Services will approve the infant car seat at check-in for use onboard. Cabin crew will assist parents with the fitting of the car seat to the passenger seat. The car seat must be the forward facing type only and one that can be secured to the seat by the use of the lap seatbelt, and not a shoulder harness (2-point seatbelt) as per car vehicles.

A seat must be booked and child's fare paid for infants travelling in this manner. Passengers must supply their own approved infant car seat as per the list below.

Acceptable car seats:

Seats accepted by United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and Regulations (FMVSS) No. 213, and are manufactured to those standards on or after February 26, 1985. US approved seats manufactured after this date must bear the following labels in red lettering: “This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft;” and “this child restraint system conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards.”

Seats approved to Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) No. 213, entitled “Child Restraint Systems” or CMVSS No. 213.1, entitled “Infant seating and restraint systems.”

Seats meeting European safety standards requirements of ECE regulation 44, -03, or later series of amendments.

Seats qualified for use in aircraft according to German “Qualification Procedure for Child Restraint Systems for Use in Aircraft” (TÜV Doc.TÜV/958-01/2001).

Should your car seat not meet any of these requirements, it can be put in the hold as checked baggage.

Installation

Child restraint devices and car seats may only be installed on aircraft seats with the type of connecting device they are approved and qualified for.** All safety and installation instructions must be followed carefully by the person accompanying the infant. Cabin crew will prohibit the use of any inadequately installed CRD or car seat that does not meet the above qualifications.

* Bassinets are provided on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact Reservations prior to departure to book this facility.

** For example, CRDs to be connected to a three-point harness only (most rearward-facing baby CRDs currently available) shall not be attached to an aircraft seat with a lap-belt only. A CRD designed to be attached to a vehicle seat by means of rigid bar lower anchorages (ISO-FX or US equivalent) only, shall only be used on aircraft seats that are equipped with such connecting devices and shall not be attached by the aircraft seat lap belt. The method of connecting must be clearly shown in the manufacturer’s instructions provided with each CRD
