Cost of living... Brisbane

Hi

Looking to move to Brizzie in 8 weeks. Looking at spending $400 a week on rent in a 2-3 bed apartment/townhouse in suburb 20mins from CBD.

Could anyone advise me on the average costs of the following?

1. Electric
2. Gas
3. Internet/phone
4. Foxtel (with all sports/movies included)
5. Water
6. Council tax (we pay this in UK but not sure how it works in Oz?)
7. Medicare

Is there anything I have missed?

Also, not sure if when renting some of the above will be included in the rent?

Any advice/info will be most welcome.

Thanks,
Scott

Could anyone advise me on the average costs of the following?

1. Electric about 0.20 cents a day i think
2. Gas
3. Internet/phone about 80-100 dollars a month with internet and free aussie calls. mobile options vary.
4. Foxtel (with all sports/movies included) not bothered with it as too expensive and i try to get out rather than watching the telly!
5. Water
6. Council tax (we pay this in UK but not sure how it works in Oz?)
7. Medicare work covers this for me.

Is there anything I have missed?

Also, not sure if when renting some of the above will be included in the rent? water they have changed the rules on recently. it depends on what you are renting - ie - if there is a meter for the property, then you can be charged for all the water. am still waiting for my first couple of bills to come through so can't give you any more idea i'm afraid.

Any advice/info will be most welcome.

Thanks,
Scott

good luck with the search for a rental property. the market is brutal and you will see 5-15 people at each viewing. make sure you have as much stuff as possible with you so you can leave the application kit completed with the realo agent. birth certificate/ proof of mortgage payments/rental back home/ passports / visa cards (authorised copies of them all are best). you are looking at quite a popular rental amount - so expect it to be busy.

some people are offering more rental than the amount asked for to try and get the property - i did an extra 10 dollars a week and got the place i was after. it is not great - but have heard of plenty doing it. campbell newman (lord mayor) has just chucked a big rates rise on us - so the prospects only seem that us people renting are going to have to bear the brunt of that once it kicks in the next few months. hope this helps. any more you want to know just drop me a PM

1. Electric - budget on $30 per f/n direct debit....usually works well
2. Gas - depends if has a gas connection as different to uk
3. Internet/phone - $30line rental per month...phone only
4. Foxtel (with all sports/movies included) $100per month??
5. Water - included in rent, may charge an excess if over XX amt of megalitres
6. Council tax (we pay this in UK but not sure how it works in Oz?) - included in rent
7. Medicare - seperate issue....Ambulanlce levy charged on Electric bill

good luck, as said previosuly, helps to get photocopies of alll your evidence done in bulk so you can hand in at realestate with completed applications.

Thanks guys.

You say we need photocopies of stuff? My partner & I currently live with her parents so have not been paying bills.... could this be an issue?

I have secured a well paid job in CBD and my partner is lookin to obtain a decent job herself when she arrives... would this help us?

Ideally we wanted to get a property secured b4 we left UK, is this possible?

You may find it a ittle harder but not impossible. Easier if you have your contract pay in acontract which can be used as proof of income etc.

In wa you have to physically view properties before you cann be eligible to rent viewings are about 15 - 30 mins and it can be busy, we had a furnished holiday let before our gear came over.the landloord gave us a reference and it is very beneficial as uk refs mean sweet f a. An mate of mine went for loads of places with no luck got a ref from oz and secured the next properties
