Any advice on Sydney suburbs

Hi all,
The time is getting nearer where the OH and I will be flying out. My work are putting us up for a month and I will be working on Miller Street which is North Sydney just over the bridge.
We are both 30 and looking for a place to rent that has a nice array of shops and restaurants in a short walking distance with good transport links into my work. I really want a maximum door to door trravel time of 30 minutes to work if possible.
We have been looking a bit of the internet but it is very hard to get a flavour for a suburb so if anybody has any sort of suggestions or could explain briefly a few suburbs that fit the spec. I am probably looking at a weekly max rent of about 600 - 650 which looks doable from my little research.
Thanks....Paul.

Hi

I`m going out to sydney in the next few months and will also be working on Miller Street, my employer will alse provide a months accomodation. Are you working for Planit IT by any chance?

I've done some research on various locations and reckon the North Shore is ideal. Its possible to get a one bedroom flat for about 500.00 a month. Nice areas are cremore, mosman, st leonards. They all seem to have good transport links to the CBD

Regards
Daz

Hi Paul, I have moved to Sydney two weeks ago (is that really only two weeks?? London seems sooooooooooo distant), more or less the same area (office in St Leonards) and the same spec. I spent the first few days exploring the surrounding suburbs (North Sydney, Crows Nest, Wollstonecraft, Waverton) to get a feeling for the places. In terms of restaurants and shops, North Sydney (big-ish shopping centre) and Crows Nest are the ones to look for. For my taste, both are a little bit to crowded to live in but certainly great options.

The second area I explored were the suburbs along and around Military Rd (Neutral Bay, Cremorne and Mosman). All thee suburbs boast a large range of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops. The drawback is that Military Rd can be quite congested, however, even from Spit Junction you can easily get to Miller St within 30min. The second downside are rental prices, this area is not the cheapest. But with your budget - no problem at all! For $500-550 you'll find excellent two-bedders.

Other options would be Lane Cove (very quiet, more family area) and Chatswood (great shopping centre but not so sure about life there).

In the end, I decided to go to Mosman as I was really impressed with the rather quaint, villagey feel of the place and also the proximity of Balmoral Beach. Nice, quiet side streets but within 5min walk you're right in the heart of Mosman. The ferry (two wharfs) gets you into the CQ within 15-20min. Found a nice place, put down the deposit and will move in on 18 June. Can't wait!

If you want more details on the areas or style/quality of appartments (as I viewed 8 on a home-search day my employer organised), pn me.
