Hi Jayne,

Have you considered Port Melbourne itself?-has a lovely old section with all amenities, cute shops and a flashy new part with lots of fab restaurants but of course as with all the most desirable places to live it comes at a price.

We are around 20 miles down bayside from the city heading towards Mornington and it takes about an hour & a half drive in peak time when one would be heading for work to get into the CBD (50 mins/1 hour on the train off peak) plus the further along the bay you go the more dull & surburban with crummy shops. I would say don't go any further down bayside than Mordialloc.

If possible I would try to rent as far in as possible-Sandringham is about 10 miles from city along the bay & has a nice village type vibe with gastro-pub, sweet coffee & tea shops, also Black Rock 12 miles along the bay nice. Or alternatively look at Williamstown only a couple of miles from Port Melbourne-lovely old area with boats, beach, restaurants, park etc-this is where we'll be moving as soon as finances allow. All these have metlink stations. (If you have a really good budget South Yarra is great-like a small town in itself, upmarket, loads of shops & life that most of the outer suburbs are completely devoid of.)

Cant tell you about the schools but these are all good areas so Im sure they'll be fine

Alot of expats head for the Mornington Pen-Mount Eliza/Marth & Mornington itself-all gorg but no Metlink so a long, long trek in to the city! Some find it worth it though.

Eltham is a pretty area if you like more rural suburbs-a few shops/coffee places, lots of parkland and also on Metlink. Obviously no beach though!

Let me know if yo have any other questions.

S
